Elizabeth barely had time to let the thought settle before movement in her peripheral vision caught her attention. A tall, dark figure approached from down the street, his strides unhurried yet purposeful.
Ezra.
Her breath hitched just slightly, but she forced herself to remain still. He was dressed much like before, a dark wool coat draped effortlessly over broad shoulders, the collar turned up slightly against the crisp autumn air. He carried himself with the same quiet authority, the kind that made the space around him feel smaller, as if the world subtly bent to accommodate his presence.
It was only when he neared that Elizabeth noticed the takeaway coffee cup in his hand. Without a word, he held it out toward Theo.
“Here.”
Theo blinked, caught off guard. “You… got me a coffee?” He accepted it hesitantly, glancing at Ezra like he’d just sprouted a second head. “Alright, who are you and what have you done with my brother?”
BROTHER?! Elizabeth's and Eloise's eyes both widened slightly at the realization.
Ezra smirked, the reaction seemingly amusing to him. “Can’t a man spend some time with his younger brother for a change?” His tone was smooth, unreadable, but Elizabeth didn’t miss the flicker of something behind his eyes, something calculated, maybe even teasing.
Theo scoffed. “Yeah, sure. Because you’re known for your spontaneous acts of sibling bonding.” He took a slow sip of the coffee, as if testing it for poison.
Ezra ignored the remark, his gaze shifting briefly to Elizabeth and Eloise. A polite nod. Nothing more. Yet, it was enough to send a slow, unwelcome warmth crawling up Elizabeth’s spine. “Ladies,” he greeted, his voice even, giving no indication that he had seen her just the day before.
That he had lingered in her mind longer than she cared to admit.
Eloise, oblivious to the slight tension settling in the air, now smiled easily. “Wow, two chance encounters in one day. Must be our lucky afternoon.” Ezra’s expression didn’t change. “Must be.”
Elizabeth, still reeling from his unexpected arrival, forced herself to look unaffected. If he was surprised to see her, he hid it well. Too well.
And for some reason, that unsettled her more than anything else.
Theo, noticing the wide-eyed, slightly rigid look still lingering on Elizabeth’s face, let out a quiet chuckle. "Well, I would introduce you, brother, but by the looks of things, you and the girls are already acquainted." His tone was casual, teasing even, but there was a flicker of curiosity in his gaze as he looked between them.
Elizabeth swallowed, forcing herself to ease the tension in her shoulders. It wasn’t lost on her that Theo had no idea of the weight Ezra carried in her mind the way his presence seemed to shift the very air around them.
Eloise, on the other hand, ever the social one, stepped forward with her usual effortless confidence. Extending her hand toward Ezra, she offered a bright but measured smile. "Eloise," she introduced herself, her voice light and spritely, but Elizabeth caught the brief flicker of caution in her eyes. "Nice to finally put a name to a face."
Ezra, ever composed, smoothly took her hand in his much larger one. In one fluid motion, he bowed slightly, simultaneously lifting the back of her hand to his lips and pressing a chaste, gentlemanly kiss against her skin. "A pleasure," he murmured, voice rich like aged whiskey.
Eloise let out a surprised giggle, her cheeks flushing slightly. "A gentleman," she teased. "Hard to tell with such an intimidating façade in Liz’s shop yesterday."
Theo, mid-sip of his coffee, paused. His dark brows furrowed slightly as he glanced at Ezra, an unspoken question in his eyes. But Ezra, ever unreadable, simply met his gaze and gave the smallest shrug, a silent dismissal of the curiosity before turning his attention back to Eloise.
Elizabeth, finally managing to shake off the intensity of the situation, decided to cut in, trying to keep the conversation light. "So, Theo tells me you’re not the shopping type?" she asked, raising a brow, willing herself to act unaffected. "Just here for the fresh coffee? Or are you searching for something in particular?" Her words hung in the air, a subtle challenge beneath them.
Ezra’s lips quirked slightly, amusement flashing in his dark eyes. Then, unexpectedly, a deep, rich laugh rumbled from his chest. It was smooth and warm, but something about it sent a strange shiver down Elizabeth’s spine. It took them all by surprise, perhaps Elizabeth the most. The sound was… unexpected. It didn’t quite fit the image she had built of him in her mind. She couldn’t decide whether it was scarily threatening or strangely endearing.
"Nothing in particular," Ezra finally said, his voice still tinged with that low amusement. He tilted his head slightly, regarding her with something unreadable in his gaze. "Can’t a man simply enjoy a walk in the fresh autumn air with his brother and a hot cup of coffee?"
Elizabeth held his gaze for a moment, searching for something beneath the surface. He was so composed, so effortlessly poised, that it was impossible to tell if there was any truth in his words. "I suppose so," she relented, though she didn’t fully believe it. She relaxed slightly, forcing herself to ease into the casualness of the conversation, but she still held an invisible barrier around herself.
Because whether or not Ezra admitted it, she knew.
There was more to his presence here than he was letting on.
Ezra took another slow sip of his coffee, seemingly content with the lull in conversation. Theo, on the other hand, glanced at his watch and let out a dramatic sigh. “Well, as riveting as this little rendezvous has been, I think it’s about time we continue on our way,” Theo said, rocking back on his heels. His smirk was easy, charming. “Places to be, mysterious errands to run, you know how it is.”
Eloise grinned, hands slipping into the pockets of her coat. “Oh, of course. Can’t have you two being predictable now, can we?” Theo’s expression turned mischievous as he leaned slightly toward her, dropping his voice into something teasingly conspiratorial. “Exactly. Gotta keep you on your toes.” Then, with a playful flick of his fingers, he threw her a wink before straightening up. Eloise, to Elizabeth’s great amusement, actually swooned, just slightly, but enough for Elizabeth to catch the way she bit her lip to suppress a giddy smile.
“Smooth,” Eloise muttered under her breath, shaking her head.
Elizabeth let out a quiet laugh, but it died in her throat when she turned back to Ezra.
Unlike Theo, who was all ease and playful charm, Ezra hadn’t moved. He still stood with the same quiet confidence, the weight of his presence undeniable. And he was watching her. His dark eyes, now so close, flickered with something she hadn’t noticed before, golden flecks scattered within the depths, catching the soft afternoon light. It was mesmerizing in a way she didn’t expect, and for a moment, she felt caught, like a thread tangled around his finger.
The air between them shifted, charged with something she couldn’t quite name. A slow pulse of electricity crawled up her spine, settling deep in her chest where her heartbeat picked up, just slightly harder than before. She wasn’t sure if it was out of want or fear.
Ezra held her gaze a second longer, unreadable as ever, before dipping his head in a small nod. “Enjoy the rest of your afternoon,” he said smoothly, his voice rich and even. Then, without another word, he turned on his heel, walking away with the same quiet authority he had arrived with.
Theo, still grinning, gave them a lazy salute before following after him.
Elizabeth exhaled slowly, not realizing she had been holding her breath.
Eloise nudged her with her elbow, voice laced with amusement. “Well. That was something.” Elizabeth could only nod, her fingers tightening slightly around the strap of her tote bag.
Yes. It certainly was.
