The smell of fresh coffee drifted through the house, warm and inviting, coaxing Elizabeth from the last remnants of sleep. She pulled on a thick-knit cardigan over her top half, her bare feet padding softly against the wooden floors as she made her way downstairs.
Rounding the corner into the living room, she found Eloise already curled up on the couch, legs tucked beneath her, a steaming mug in hand. The television murmured softly in the background, some crime drama playing, though Eloise didn’t seem particularly invested, just something to fill the quiet of the morning.
“Well, look who finally decided to wake up,” Eloise teased, smirking over the rim of her mug.
Elizabeth rolled her eyes, running a hand through her tousled hair. “It’s barely nine.”
“Exactly,” Eloise quipped. “I’ve been up for an hour. Made coffee. Contemplated life. Considered making breakfast but decided that was far too much effort.” Elizabeth chuckled as she made her way to the kitchen, pouring herself a cup before leaning against the counter. “Any grand plans for today, or are we embracing another day of doing absolutely nothing?”
Elizabeth considered it as she took a slow sip of coffee. A lazy day wandering through town, browsing shelves of second-hand bookstores, finding cozy cafés, and just existing without an agenda sounded… nice. “You know what? That actually sounds perfect,” she admitted, pushing off the counter. “Let’s do it.”
Eloise grinned. “Good. Now go get dressed, because if you step outside in that sweater that has a hole in the sleeve, I’m disowning you.” Elizabeth rolled her eyes but smiled all the same.
Eloise had originally come to help her settle in, make the move feel less daunting, help unpack, set up furniture, and get the place feeling like home. But between all the chaos of life, the unexpected events, and the growing list of distractions, most of the settling in had already happened, piece by piece, without much thought. Now, it felt like they were simply existing in the space, slipping into an unspoken routine.
It was nice. Comforting, even.
And today, for once, felt like it would be simple. Normal. And she was more than ready for it.
The crisp autumn air carried the scent of fallen leaves and freshly brewed coffee as Elizabeth and Eloise strolled leisurely through town, their arms linked as they wandered from shop to shop. The streets were lively but not crowded, a gentle hum of weekend activity filling the air, locals moving between cafés, small boutiques displaying their seasonal window arrangements, and the occasional street performer strumming a guitar on the corner.
Elizabeth hugged her coat tighter around her body, the cool breeze nipping at her skin. She exhaled, watching her breath curl into the air before disappearing. This, she thought, was exactly the kind of morning she needed.
"I forgot how much I love days like this," she mused. "Right?" Eloise grinned, adjusting her scarf. "Just crisp enough for cute sweaters but not so cold we regret existing. Perfect shopping weather." They had spent the last hour meandering through small, independent stores, sifting through antique trinkets and admiring overpriced candles that smelled like ‘woodsmoke and mystery’ or ‘first snow.’ Their latest stop had been a tiny charity shop tucked between a bakery and a bookstore, its window display filled with worn leather-bound novels and mismatched china sets.
Eloise had predictably gotten lost among the racks of vintage coats, while Elizabeth had lingered by a shelf of second-hand books, running her fingers along their spines as she let her mind drift. There was something charming about old books, the way they carried pieces of past owners. She had ended up purchasing one, a romance novel of course.
As they stepped out onto the street, Elizabeth tucked the book into her tote bag. She barely had a second to register the figure rounding the corner before colliding straight into him.
"Woah..."
A strong hand caught her arm before she could stumble back, steadying her with ease.
Elizabeth blinked, startled, only to be met with a familiar smirk.
Theo.
The charming, sharp-featured man from outside the club. The one who had helped get them inside. The one who, unlike Ezra, had a kind of effortless warmth about him, dangerous in his own way, but with a different edge. He was dressed almost casually in a pair of belted cream trousers, semi-smart shoes, and a branded zip-neck jumper in a dark brown.
For a split second, Elizabeth felt herself tense, her body bracing for the kind of intensity that had surrounded Ezra like a storm cloud. But it never came. Instead, there was something… different about Theo. His presence didn’t press against her like Ezra’s had. There was no underlying current of danger in the way he looked at them, just amusement, maybe a hint of curiosity. Still, a quiet caution lingered in the back of her mind, an awareness that anyone could masquerade.
"Fancy meeting you here," Theo said smoothly, releasing her once she was steady. His dark eyes flicked between them, amusement dancing in his expression. "You two stalking me, or is this just an incredibly lucky coincidence?" He winked at Eloise.
Eloise, ever the quick-witted one, shot him a grin. "Oh, absolutely stalking. We have a whole map of your routine drawn out. You just messed it up by showing up here instead of wherever you were supposed to be." Theo chuckled, the sound rich and easy. "Damn, and here I thought I was unpredictable."
Elizabeth, still regaining her composure, shook her head with a soft laugh. "Didn’t expect to see you outside the club scene." Theo slipped his hands into the pockets of his coat, tilting his head slightly. "I do exist outside of dim lighting and overpriced cocktails, you know. Contrary to popular belief." Eloise raised a brow. "Do you, though? Because I have my doubts already." Theo feigned offense, placing a hand over his chest. "Wounded. Truly."
Elizabeth smiled despite herself, the exchange breaking through the last of the unease she hadn’t realized she was still carrying from the last few days. There was something disarming about Theo, his ability to make any encounter feel casual, light, as if the weight of their previous night at the club hadn’t left an unspoken tension hanging in the air.
As the breeze picked up, a familiar scent reached her, warm and smooth, a mix of leather and oud wood with an unexpected floral note woven through it. It was subtle but distinct, an almost deliberate kind of fragrance, refined yet masculine. She wondered absently if it was the kind of thing someone like Theo chose himself or if it was simply something that fit him without effort. Either way, it was… pleasant.
"So, what are you doing in town?" she asked, shifting the conversation. Theo glanced toward the shop behind them, his smirk widening. "Same as you, apparently. Pottering around." He gave them both an exaggerated once-over. "I gotta say, though, not sure you two have the same taste in high fashion as I do." Eloise scoffed. "You think you're better dressed than us?"
"I'm just saying, if this were a fashion showdown, I'd be walking away with the trophy."
Elizabeth shook her head, amused at how easily Eloise and Theo bantered like old friends despite having only met them once. She had a feeling Eloise could probably keep up with him all day, but before they could veer too far into a battle of wit, she cut in.
"Are you shopping alone"
Theo let out a laugh, shaking his head. "Alone, for now. Ezra’s not really the 'casual shopping’ type, if you couldn’t guess."
At the mention of his name, Elizabeth felt an involuntary shiver travel down her spine, though whether it was from the wind or something deeper, she wasn’t sure.
The thought settled in slowly, a quiet unease creeping along the edges of her mind. Of course, it made sense, people like them seemed to move in the same circles, but the confirmation left her feeling exposed, as if she’d unknowingly stepped deeper into something she wasn’t meant to be part of.
She forced herself to keep her expression neutral, to nod along as if nothing had shifted. But in the back of her mind, a question lingered.
Just how well did Theo know Ezra?
