Chapter 15 - Sunlight Doesn’t Suit Me, But She Does. (E POV)

1227 Words
I moved through the bustling streets with the kind of measured control that had become second nature to me. The crisp autumn air carried the distant hum of the city, mingling with the faint aroma of roasted chestnuts from a street vendor nearby. My footsteps were unhurried, my coat draped effortlessly over broad shoulders, collar turned up against the cold. The coffee cup in my hand radiated warmth through the thin cardboard, but my mind was elsewhere. Theo had headed into town under the guise of running errands, though I knew my younger brother well enough to suspect there was more to it. After all, we have people to do that. Theo was not one to aimlessly wander, not without an agenda. He had always been the more social of the two, always moving in circles I'd often avoid, but not often did he make it his own responsibility to run errands. His arrogance often overshadowed the task. In a mission to figure out what he was really up to, I spotted Theo, standing by a storefront, but it was the figure beside him that truly caught my attention. Elizabeth. The moment I saw her, something shifted. A pulse of something unnameable, something my mind refused to name, rippled through me. She stood there, caught in casual conversation, completely unaware of the effect she had, not just on me but on the surrounding space. There was something about the way the sunlight hit her then, catching the waves of her hair, turning them into soft ribbons of gold and chestnut. The gentle curve of her cheek, the slight part of her lips as she listened, the way her coat wrapped snugly around her frame, there was an effortless allure to it all. And then, there was her scent. It reached me before she even turned my way. A delicate thing, laced with something warm, something faintly sweet. Vanilla, perhaps. A touch of honey? It was subtle, not overpowering, but it curled around me, clinging to the cold air between us. It was unexpected, entirely different from the sterile scents I was used to, expensive perfume, cigars, leather. This was something softer, something grounding. I knew I should look away, should suppress the way my gaze was lingering, but I couldn't. She turned then, noticing me. I caught the sharp inhale, the way her fingers instinctively gripped the strap of her bag a little tighter. I had expected surprise, perhaps even a little wariness, but there was something else flickering in those eyes of hers, something guarded yet unmistakably drawn in. I wasn’t sure if it was curiosity or trepidation, but I knew one thing, it wasn’t indifference. My footsteps were purposefully slow, deliberate as I approached. The weight of my presence had always commanded a room, even when outdoors. I could feel it in the way Elizabeth stiffened, in the way her friend, Eloise, if I remember correctly, tilted her head, assessing me like I was some puzzle to be solved. Without a word, I held out the coffee toward Theo. "Here." Theo blinked, momentarily caught off guard. "You… got me a coffee?" His tone was almost accusatory, as if I had just shattered some unspoken rule between us. It only made me smirk, watching as Theo hesitated before accepting the cup. "Alright, who are you and what have you done with my brother?" Theo muttered before taking a cautious sip. It was then that he caught the sharp intake of breath from Elizabeth and Eloise simultaneously, their gazes snapping toward them. Brother. I had to suppress a chuckle at their reaction. I have no doubt Theo was thoroughly enjoying their surprise. "Can’t a man spend some time with his younger brother for a change?" I said smoothly, watching Elizabeth from the corner of my eye. Theo scoffed. "Yeah, sure. Because you’re known for your spontaneous acts of sibling bonding." I ignored him, instead shifting my attention briefly to the two women. I dipped my head in a small nod, polite but distant. "Ladies." Elizabeth's lips parted slightly, as if about to say something, but she quickly caught herself. I had seen that look before, the struggle to appear unaffected. She did it well, masking the emotions beneath the surface, but I was used to watching people closely. She couldn't hide from me, not entirely. Eloise, on the other hand, smiled easily, stepping forward. "Wow, two chance encounters in one day. Must be our lucky afternoon." "Must be," I responded, though I ensured there was something unreadable in my gaze as I spoke. Theo, ever observant, let out a quiet chuckle. "Well, I would introduce you, brother, but by the looks of things, you and the girls are already acquainted." I didn't respond, but my eyes met Elizabeth’s then. A quiet challenge lingered in the air between us both, unspoken yet potent. Eloise, with her effortless social grace, extended her hand toward me. "Eloise. Nice to finally put a name to a face." I took her hand smoothly, my grip firm yet controlled. In one fluid motion, I bowed slightly, brushing a chaste kiss against the back of her hand. "A pleasure." Eloise let out a surprised giggle, her cheeks tinting with color. "A gentleman," she mused. "Hard to tell with such an intimidating façade in Liz’s shop yesterday." I caught the way Theo’s brows knitted slightly, the way my younger brother’s gaze flicked between myself and Elizabeth. I simply gave the smallest shrug in response. Unbothered. Unreadable. Elizabeth, however, decided to step in then, her voice smooth but carrying the hint of something sharp beneath it. "So, Theo tells me you’re not the shopping type? Just here for the fresh coffee? Or are you searching for something in particular?" I exhaled a quiet chuckle, the sound deep and low. I could see the way her shoulders tensed slightly at it, the way her breath hitched just a fraction. "Nothing in particular," I replied, tilting my head slightly. "Can’t a man simply enjoy a walk in the fresh autumn air with his brother and a hot cup of coffee?" Elizabeth held my gaze, searching for something beneath the surface. But I had spent years perfecting the art of being unreadable. I watched as she finally relented, though her eyes told me she didn’t fully believe it. Theo, sensing the tension, clapped his hands together. "Well, as riveting as this little rendezvous has been, I think it’s about time we continue on our way. Places to be, mysterious errands to run, you know how it is." Eloise grinned. "Oh, of course. Can’t have you two being predictable now, can we?" Theo smirked. "Exactly. Gotta keep you on your toes." Meanwhile, I lingered just a second longer, my gaze settling on Elizabeth once more. The afternoon light caught the golden flecks in her eyes, making them seem impossibly deep. For a brief moment, the world around us faded, the street sounds dulling, time stretching into something almost tangible. Then, with a small nod, I finally broke the moment. "Enjoy the rest of your afternoon." And just like that, I turned, walking away with the same quiet authority I had arrived with. But even as I stepped into the crowd, I knew one thing for certain. Elizabeth would not be so easily forgotten. And something told me I wouldn’t be, either.
