I hated doing jobs like this they went by too quickly but at least I got to let out some pent-up frustration. I brought my fist back to continue pounding this piece of s**t of a vampire into the pavement. My body was shaking from the power pulsing through me.
“Now..are you ready to talk?” I asked propping the man against the alley wall. He spits a few teeth out before speaking.
“Who the f**k do you think you-” I wasn't in the mood for all these questions. My foot connected with a few ribs stopping his next words. I grabbed his shirt and watched as he flinched. “Let’s skip the formalities. You torched a clan of vampires but you are nobody. Who do you work for?”. I rocked back on my heels as he started to cough up blood. My new boots, I sighed looking at the sky, I can never catch a break. The vampire moaned loudly before sagging to the ground a little.
“Hey! Who do you work for!” I yelled causing the vampire to snap up. This guy was going to crack in a few minutes but I was annoyingly impatient for some reason. Some reason as if I didn’t know, it was this stupid mate pulling sensation. My chest was constricted as I thought of my mate, whoever she was. This was the most I’ve felt from the mate pull in three months. I must be close to her on this side of the world. I normally worked on the other side of world where there were mainly immortals. I didn't like to work so close to the humans. I knew my mate was born on this side of the world and that was another reason I chose to stay away. I noticed the vampire had succumbed to tears as I looked back at his battered body. He began to stutter I rolled my eyes.
“Speak!” I roared close to his face. I felt my eyes shift from gold to red and saw the fear in his eyes. My eyes weren’t the normal shade of a red for a vampire, they had a ring of fire circling them a clue to what my mate's gift was. Not that I cared since I never planned to seek her out.
“Iris! His name is Iris!..That’s all I know I swear!”. The vampire spat.
“What?”. I was so lost in thought I forgot my mission at hand. The vampire looked at me with a confused expression.
“Oh”, I said before snapping his neck. This little mate was interfering with work more and more these days. I punched the wall over the vampire's head breathing heavily. My hand healed almost instantly, something else that didn’t happen until my mate was born. My mate brought out this power in me that I have never felt before. I was never a normal vampire to begin with, seeing as my mother was a wolf and my father a vampire. I possessed abilities from both wolf and vampire, but I considered myself more vampire than a wolf. My mate changed me physically as well bringing things to the surface sometimes without my permission like my claws. I had never shifted into a wolf but I felt something stirring inside of me.
I grabbed the vampire by its legs, tossed him over my shoulder and began walking back to my truck. Before I could take another step my heart skipped and my body began to heat up. My hands fisted without me trying and my nostrils flared. I strained to hear and closed my eyes. I could hear panting and struggle coming from somewhere nearby. I dropped the vamp and sprinted almost mindlessly towards the sounds. I couldn’t understand why these sounds pushed me to speeds I didn’t know I possessed until I stopped.
There were four vampires in the alley I easily picked up their inhuman scents. Three vampires seemed to be teaming up on the smallest one. Cowards. Though the fight appeared to be unfair, the tiny vampire was putting up a better fight than expected. My heart was working on overdrive as I watched, now I was hyped and itching for a fight. The tiny vampire turned its head to look at me and my body completely shut down as I looked into the wildest golden eyes I had ever seen before. My knees locked and I felt as if I was suffocating. Mate.

The loud music boomed through the speakers at the bar I was sitting at. I didn’t mind the noise it was a pleasant distraction from the ache working it’s way through my entire body. I shifted in my seat trying to push the pain to the back of my head. I was here to lure out a local vampire group helping to set fires on innocent vampire clans. I spotted them half an hour ago and was waiting on the perfect opportunity. My head throbbed as I rocked back and forth to the music. This pain was more intense lately which could only mean I was in close proximity to my mate.
I groaned thinking of the possibility of finally meeting my mate. I started feeling him five years ago. He never came for me. The hurt from this reminder stung. Before my mother and father were murdered they would sit me down and tell me how important ones mate was. My mother was so excited for me, she had practically already planned my wedding. I didn’t know what to expect but I certainly didn’t expect my mate to never come for me. I told myself each day I didn’t care but deep down I knew I was incomplete.
I was alone. I was a strong vampire, stronger than anyone I’ve came across. My mother told me I was special, but all mothers say that. My father would go on and on about my mate taking responsibility for me. He said he would come because he needed me to survive. He seemed to be surviving just fine without me. Ugh the resentment I had for my mate was sometimes to hard to feel. I didn’t know this man but the intense emotions brought out of me when I thought of him were so strong.
The bartender came around again and I motioned for him to pour me another shot.
I shook my head looking at the vampires again, they were getting up from their table now. I quickly rose from my position, paid for my drinks and pushed through the crowd and out the door. The fresh air was such a reliever as I waited for the vampires to exit. My body felt like it was made of glass as I turned to face the men.
“Hello boys”, I purred smoothly.
Their heads shot up simultaneously, each man breaking into a knowing smile. I smiled back confidently. I trained my most of life to be a vampire hunter. I never failed a mission and I wasn’t going to let this mate pull ruin that now.
“Well hello what do we have here?”, the ugliest one of them asked. His red eyes bore into mine without ceasing.
“How about a little cat and mouse?”, I turned on my heel and ran. They wasted no time following me, I ran until we were in a excluded area. I pounced on the first one to appear, pulling a stake from my boot mid air. I caught the vampire on his shoulder before bouncing back on the tips of my boots. Mr. Ugly charged at me just as the other two appeared. I quickly jumped back and let out a series of blows to his face.
I had to admit the added strength my mate unknowingly gave me was so much fun to have. The other two vampires joined in and I felt my power swell. My hands moved faster delivering blows to each one. A fist caught me in the chin and I grunted. It knocked me back a few steps but I quickly regained my footing. I was in my happy place ridding the earth of these monsters when my nose flared.
My head turned on it’s own to find a large..wolf?..vampire?..something large standing at the end of the alley. My heart stopped for a minute as his red burning eyes held mine. Mate.
