EXT. STREET FOOD CART - LATER THAT AFTERNOON
Julian is standing in the rain. He is holding two paper plates. He looks miserable.
Maya stands under a tiny umbrella, eating a taco.
MAYA
You insisted on walking.
JULIAN
I wanted to see the city.
MAYA
We are standing in a puddle, eating tacos, while it rains. This is the city.
JULIAN
(Takes a bite of his taco)
It’s... spicy.
MAYA
It’s a taco, Julian. It’s supposed to be spicy.
JULIAN
(Laughs)
You know, Marcus told me to book a reservation at "Le Bernardin."
MAYA
And you chose the taco cart. Why?
JULIAN
Because at Le Bernardin, everyone knows who I am. Here, I’m just the guy getting rained on.
Maya looks at him. She sees something in his eyes. It’s not the "Golden Boy" tech bro look. It’s lonely.
MAYA
So, you’re rich and lonely. Tragic.
JULIAN
I’m serious, Maya. I’m tired of the "performance." Everyone wants something. My money, my influence, my approval. You just want me to stop spilling wine on things.
MAYA
That is true. I have very low expectations.
JULIAN
(Steps closer)
Maybe I like that. Maybe I want to earn it.
The rain stops suddenly. The sun comes out.
They look at each other. The moment hangs in the air.
MAYA
(Internal Monologue)
Don't do it. Don't feel the spark. Don't.
Suddenly, a loud motorcycle backfires down the street. Maya jumps. Julian instinctively reaches out to steady her.
Their hands touch.
Sound Effect: HEART MONITOR FLATLINE. BEEP... BEEP...
MAYA
(Internal Monologue)
Zero. Still zero.
JULIAN
(Internal Monologue)
Wait, did her heart just stop?
MAYA
(Pulling her hand away)
We should go.
JULIAN
Wait. I had a good time. Even if my shoes are ruined.
MAYA
It was... tolerable.
JULIAN
Tolerable. I’ll take it. Can I see you again?
Maya looks at him. She knows this is a bad idea. He’s chaos. He’s money. He’s the opposite of her.
But he’s also the only person who’s ever looked at her like she’s the interesting one.
MAYA
Okay. But no gifts. No thimbles.
JULIAN
No thimbles.
SCENE 5: INT. VANE TECH - LATE AFTERNOON
Marcus is waiting by the elevator. Julian walks in, soaking wet, smelling like cilantro.
MARCUS
How was the "date"?
JULIAN
She didn't fall in love with me.
MARCUS
Thank god.
JULIAN
She didn't even like me. She just tolerated me.
MARCUS
That sounds healthy.
JULIAN
(Grinning)
It’s a challenge. And I never lose.
SCENE 6: INT. THREAD BARE WORKSHOP - NIGHT
Maya is cleaning up. She finds the thimble in her pocket. She pulls it out. It’s cold and silver.
She looks at her reflection in the metal spool.
MAYA
(To herself)
Heart rate zero. Safe.
She puts the thimble in a drawer.
FADE OUT.
