Hours have passed. The sun is setting, painting the room in gold and orange light. The tapestry is restored—bright, whole, stunning.
Maya stands back, wiping her hands on a cloth. She looks exhausted but proud.
MAYA
It’s done. The colors are stable. The tears are re-woven. It’ll last another hundred years easy.
JULIAN
(Steps beside her)
You’re amazing, you know that? You took something everyone thought was ruined, and you made it perfect again.
MAYA
It’s what I do.
She turns to look at him. They’re standing close. Too close.
JULIAN
I kept my word. I didn’t break anything. I didn’t use money to fix it. I helped. I learned. And I actually... really liked it.
MAYA
You were... surprisingly helpful. And you didn’t complain once about your knees or your suit.
JULIAN
So... according to our deal... I earned that second date. Your choice. Wherever you want. No fancy dinners, no jets, no gifts. Just us.
Maya looks at him. She thinks about her rule: Heart Rate Zero. She thinks about how safe she’s always felt alone. But then she thinks about how he sees her—how he admires the things she loves, how he listens, how he treats her work like it matters.
She feels that tiny flutter again. A little stronger this time.
MAYA
Okay.
JULIAN
(Surprised, eyes lighting up)
Okay? Really?
MAYA
Really. But we’re going to the old arcade downtown. The one with the broken pinball machines and terrible pizza. And you have to let me beat you at air hockey.
JULIAN
(Laughs)
Deal. But I’m warning you—I’m competitive. Even at air hockey.
He reaches out, gently brushes a stray thread from her hair. His hand lingers near her cheek.
MAYA
(Internal Monologue)
Okay, maybe... maybe it’s not zero anymore. Maybe it’s one. Just a little bit.
JULIAN
Maya... can I ask you something?
MAYA
Mhm?
JULIAN
When you look at me now... is the heart rate still zero?
Maya looks at him, a small, secret smile on her face.
MAYA
...It’s complicated.
Neon lights flash: OPEN, GAMES, PIZZA. Julian holds the door open for Maya. She walks in, laughing at something he said.
Inside, Sloane is hiding behind a vending machine, holding her phone, live-streaming to someone.
SLOANE
(Whispering excitedly)
Guys! It’s happening! The project is working! She’s smiling! She’s smiling at him!
Back inside, Maya turns to Julian, holding a slice of terrible pizza.
MAYA
Just so you know... if you make me actually fall in love with you... I’m going to be very annoyed.
JULIAN
(Grinning)
I’ll take that risk.
FADE OUT.
