CHAPTER TWENTY The inside of the house had been completely gutted, the walls stripped of everything resembling decoration. Flaked paint clung to the wooden panelling, and mold crept over every surface. Brickwork from the foundation of the house protruded into the hallway, and the ceiling had been all but dismantled in a frenzied hunt for who knew what.
