CHAPTER 6

1048 Words
(Selene’s POV) “f**k YOU, DAD!” Daxton’s face turned pale after cursing at Lucian while I coughed violently after taking a sip of wine. Lucian was completely insane for delivering news that I hadn’t even explicitly agreed to. He simply assumed that I wouldn’t reject his offer. And the truth was, I didn’t know if I could refuse it or not, considering that I was also aware he could be a strong protector for my pack. A smirk formed on Lucian’s lips as if he had just won against his son—the same son who had abandoned me. The restaurant turned chaotic as the people around us absorbed every word of our heated conversation. A wave of discomfort washed over me. I felt like the sole cause of this mess because all the attention was directed at me. “Lucian,” I whispered his name, but I received pure indifference. “Are you that crazy, Dad?! Are you dating my ex? Have you completely lost your mind?!” Daxton’s voice rang in my ears, his tone filled with disbelief. But beyond that disbelief, there was jealousy. Unfortunately, I refused to let myself hope. If he were truly jealous, if he still had feelings for me, he wouldn’t have cast me aside in the first place. “You heard me right, son. She will be your new mother.” Once again, a chill ran down my spine at the way Lucian emphasized his words, making sure not only Daxton but everyone in the room understood his intent. I swallowed hard, wanting nothing more than to flee from this place. I didn’t want to hear the inevitable gossip that would undoubtedly wound me. Daxton stared at me, stepping closer, his gaze searching for the truth in my eyes. “What did you do to my father, you b***h? Did you sell your body to him so he’d want to marry you? Are you that desperate?” he spat, his voice dripping with hatred and disgust. As if abandoning me wasn’t enough, his cruel words shattered me into pieces. How could a man like him exist? One who couldn’t even speak with a hint of gentleness or at least ask with some respect? I couldn’t answer him. My lips felt paralyzed, as if something was forcing them shut. “You can’t answer because it’s true, isn’t it?” he sneered. “You’re nothing but a filthy wolf who threw herself at her former father-in-law just to climb the ranks!” “ENOUGH, DAXTON!” Lucian’s commanding voice silenced the room. Strangely, standing beside him gave me a sense of security—even if it meant being protected from his own son. I met Daxton’s eyes with a cold stare, letting my pain show. Even if he couldn’t understand the depths of my emotions, at least I wasn’t crying in front of him. Then, without hesitation, Lucian took my hand, openly displaying his claim over me in front of Daxton and everyone else. His grip was firm, yet oddly gentle, as if declaring to the world that I was his. Daxton’s eyes widened in horror at the sight of his own father holding my hand, his expression turning red with fury. “Dad, take back your words! She will never be my mother!” he snapped. Lucian merely chuckled, unbothered. Then, without breaking eye contact with Daxton, he lifted my hand to his lips, placing a slow, deliberate kiss on the back of it. A rush of warmth spread through my veins at his touch. I gasped softly, my breath hitching at his unexpected act—so refined, so calculated, as if he knew exactly what I needed at that moment. “Why would I return my words when I meant them completely?” Lucian mused. “She’s not right for you!” Daxton argued, his frustration evident. “The age gap—f**k! You don’t belong with someone as young as her! She’s my ex, Dad!” I could hear the desperation, anger, and disbelief in his voice as if he were begging for this to be undone. But I knew the truth. Lucian wouldn’t let me go. Even though I hadn’t given him my answer, I had known from the start that he wouldn’t discard me the way his son had. “Daxton, my dear son… you made your choice; now I’m making mine,” Lucian said calmly. “You and Selene are no longer tied to each other. You officially separated. So why do you care? Don’t tell me you regret divorcing her?” A wicked smirk stretched across Lucian’s face as he taunted his son, watching him unravel. “I don’t regret it at all!” Daxton barked, enunciating each word forcefully. “Then why are you so insistent?” Lucian countered. “Your mother is gone, and Selene… well, she fits perfectly beside me.” I swallowed hard, my heartbeat racing as murmurs filled the room. “Did the Lycan King just claim the first divorced She-Alpha as his mate?” “Is she even worthy of being with the King? What is she thinking?!” “I bet she really did sell her body to him, just like his son said.” Laughter erupted from certain corners of the restaurant as the rumours spread like wildfire. Meanwhile, I remained standing beside the Lycan King—Lucian. “Do you hear them, old man?” Daxton sneered. “You’ve made yourself and her the center of gossip!” He then hissed, “And you’re humiliating me in the process!” Lucian chuckled, utterly unbothered. “I am the Lycan King. Their words mean nothing. My only duty is to protect my pack. If you’re ashamed of my methods, then I should be ashamed of you first—for failing to uphold the values I taught you. I raised you to be loyal to one woman, yet you weren’t even satisfied with the one you had.” Daxton froze, completely taken aback by his father’s words. And honestly, so was I. “Lucian,” I whispered beside him. “You’re playing a dangerous game.” He turned to me, a devilish smirk on his lips, and simply said, “I never play. I only win.”
