(Lucian’s POV)
“Harper, come with me now.”
“If I may ask, where are we going, Alpha?”
“To the Council of Elders.”
I was already prepared to go there because the notice I received yesterday had honestly shocked me.
No one had the right to stop me from making Selena my Luna. Not even the Elders. I was not afraid.
As usual, Harper drove the car while I sat beside him. Despite his constant insistence that I should sit in the back, I refused. Harper was not my driver; he was my Beta. I had no problem sitting next to him.
“What happened that made us need to go there?” he asked during the drive.
I took a deep breath. “They refused to grant me permission to marry Selena because she is a discarded She-Alpha and has also been rejected by my own son.”
Harper remained silent even though I was waiting for his reaction. But when I glanced at him, his expression showed that he was deep in thought.
“Tell me what you think about this, Harper,” I demanded.
He cleared his throat and glanced at me briefly. “I won’t say anything until I hear what the Elders have to say myself, Alpha.”
I clicked my tongue but let it go. I never forced my subordinates to speak their minds hastily.
“But King, are you truly serious about making Selena your mate?” Harper asked after a moment.
“Tsk! You ask as if you doubt my intentions?”
“No, King. I just felt that yesterday you spoke with a lot of emotion, so—”
“That’s the same as doubting me, Harper. But it’s fine; I’m not angry,” I said. “And yes, I meant every word I said.”
Harper nodded, though he seemed tense. Anyone would feel nervous when heading to the Council. But not me.
I was the Lycan King. I feared no one as long as I committed no crimes.
I wanted Selena not just because she was intriguing but also because she was the perfect choice for my mate.
Especially when I envisioned that uniting Selena’s pack with mine would make us even stronger.
“We’re here, King.”
Harper and I stepped out of the car and entered the Council chambers. The Elders were already looking at me as if they had anticipated my arrival. Their expressions turned serious as we entered the meeting hall.
“I will not accept your rejection. Even if you refuse, I will still make her my mate!” I declared firmly.
“That would be disgraceful for you, Alpha Lucian! If you do this, your reputation as the Lycan King will be ruined!”
“She is not as disgraceful as you claim! It was my son who dishonoured her by rejecting her!”
“But still, your son rejected Selena for an Omega. That alone proves that Selena, as a She-Alpha, holds little value!”
My breathing became ragged, and my fury surged at their words.
“Believe us, this will only bring ruin to your life, Alpha Lucian.”
I slammed my hands on the table and stood up, my anger blazing. “I do not care, and I am not afraid because I am the Lycan King!”
I stormed out of the room, signalling Harper to follow. We left the Elders’ chambers while I was still seething.
“Alpha, may I say something?” Harper asked.
“Go ahead.”
“I am worried about what the Elders said regarding your reputation and the consequences of making Selena your mate, Alpha.”
I exhaled deeply. Even my Beta was now feeling afraid, uncertain, and anxious. But still, nothing could shake my determination.
“Let me bear whatever consequences may come. As my Beta, your only task is to follow my orders.”
“Understood, Alpha.”
“Now, I have a task for you. Watch over Selena. I should be meeting her, but I will restrain myself for now to keep my promise.”
“Is there anything else, Alpha?”
“Just make sure she is safe from any harm. I am certain that the Elders or other werewolves who oppose our union might try to hurt her.”
Harper nodded, and I knew he had no choice but to obey my command.
In truth, I wanted nothing more than to see her and tell her everything. But I had promised to give her a few days, and I did not want to burden her thoughts.
Damn it. Just thinking about her made me want to hold her close and make her mine completely.
