(Selene’s POV)
“No! I am not jealous!”
I pushed him away after that kiss, defending myself from his constant teasing.
“Oh, really? I can smell the jealousy, you know.”
I swallowed hard and let out a deep sigh. “I was just curious, that’s all. Besides… there’s no way you and she… would ever get back together, right?”
He chuckled and shook his head. Just seeing his reaction like that made me feel relieved.
Of course, he wouldn’t go back to his wife—stupid Selene! His wife was dead, and there was no way she would come back.
Sometimes, my foolishness made me look ridiculous—being jealous for no reason when, in reality, the person I was worried about no longer existed.
“Okay, what do you want to know about her?” Lucian asked, his expression turning serious.
“I only know that she died a few months after giving birth to Dexton. I mean, Dexton himself told me that, but that’s all I know. He never really talked about her.”
“And?”
“Lucian, I don’t even know what she looked like. I don’t have a single photo of her.”
Lucian fell silent after that, and his expression changed. His jaw tightened so sharply that I could hear his teeth grinding.
I must have brought up something I shouldn’t have. Maybe he loved his wife so much that losing her still hurt him deeply whenever he thought about it.
I had never lost a partner to death, only to betrayal, and even that was painful enough. So how much worse must it have been for Lucian, who lost his wife to death?
In a way, I could understand his pain.
“It’s fine if you don’t want to talk about it. We can discuss it another time when you’re ready,” I said.
Honestly, I felt a little sad that he didn’t want to talk about it. But I couldn’t be selfish—everyone had a dark past, and sharing it meant reliving wounds that varied in depth and pain.
Who knew how deep Lucian’s wounds ran? He never even looked like someone who held onto bitterness.
But he was a man, and men rarely voiced their pain.
“Well,” he suddenly stood up, and—
“Lucian!” I shrieked in shock when he suddenly lifted me into his arms. “What are you doing?!”
He sat down on the sofa, pulling me onto his lap until our faces were so close that we could only look at each other.
“I’ll tell you the story, but I don’t want you to be scared and run away,” he said in a soft voice.
Whatever he was about to say, I was ready to listen. “Alright.”
He took a deep breath and exhaled. He must have been forcing himself to recall that event. I couldn’t even imagine how much pain he had gone through.
“She died, that’s true,” he began.
I studied his expression carefully. There was tension written all over his face.
“But she died because she betrayed me.”
I gasped, my lips parting in shock. I had completely misjudged the situation. My pity for his late wife instantly disappeared.
The mere mention of betrayal already made me furious—it was a word I despised. It reminded me of Dexton’s betrayal.
“How did it happen? How do you know for sure that she betrayed you?” I asked cautiously.
“She was f*****g another Alpha when Dexton was still a baby. Right in front of Dexton.”
“Oh… wow. That’s really shocking, Lucian. I thought she died from an illness or something.”
Lucian stared at me for a few seconds while rubbing my hand. “This next part might shock you even more—how she died.”
My heart pounded. I hadn’t even heard it yet, but I was already bracing myself.
“I was furious. We fought. In the end, I killed that Alpha… and then I made Rosemary the last one I killed. So… she died because I killed her.”
I covered my mouth with my hand. He was serious. The Alpha Lycan King was truly that powerful. It didn’t matter that she had been his wife—when she betrayed him, he killed her.
But when he talked about Rosemary, there wasn’t even a hint of regret in his eyes. As if ending her life had truly satisfied him.
Damn… this story was eerily similar to what happened with Dexton. The only difference was that I didn’t kill him—and I probably never could.
“I know this story reminds you of what happened with my son,” he said. “And that’s actually what drew me to you, Selene.”
I frowned. “You’re interested in me because of that?”
“More precisely, you captivated me. The moment I found out my son had betrayed you, you became fascinating in my eyes.”
I looked at him and smiled warmly, placing my hands on his cheeks.
“But… does Dexton know about this? The truth?” I asked.
He shook his head. “No, he doesn’t. And it’s better that way. As far as he knows, his mother died giving birth to him. That’s why he never told you much about her.”
Now I understand. Despite hating what Dexton had done, Lucian’s fatherly instinct made him protect his son from the ugly truth about his mother.
For some reason, that made me admire Lucian even more. He always had a way of impressing me.
“By the way, I don’t mean to be offensive, but… is there a chance that Dexton isn’t actually your son?”
Lucian burst out laughing before answering, “Selene, a wolf can always tell if a child is theirs or not. So I know for certain that Dexton is my son. When you have a child with me one day, you’ll understand too.”
Even while explaining, he still managed to tease me. His words about having children with him made my cheeks flush.
Before this, I had never even thought about having children. But Lucian, in his own way, was subtly hinting at it.
“What truly disappoints me is that he inherited his mother’s worst trait… infidelity. I could never forgive a partner who cheats.”
“And that’s why you did it—you killed her because her betrayal was unforgivable,” I added.
“Exactly. Because to me, when I devote myself to my mate, only my mate exists in my heart and my eyes.”
