(Lucian’s POV)
“He left. That’s good.”
“No, it’s not, Lucian. He’ll only hate you more as his father. Aren’t you afraid of losing your own son just because—”
She didn’t finish her sentence, but I knew what she was about to say. She just couldn’t bring herself to say it yet because she still hadn’t answered my offer.
“I’m never afraid of losing my son, but I am afraid of losing my life partner,” I replied.
She let out a sigh, and in my eyes, she looked rather striking. Sometimes, I wondered about Dexton—why did he willingly reject Selene just because of that Omega? But if he hadn’t rejected her, I wouldn’t have been by Selene’s side like that.
“Does losing your mate to death make you sad?” she asked.
I nodded. “It happened years ago. I have to admit I was sad, but not for long, because I had to focus on my pack.”
Her eyes scanned the entire restaurant. There were still many eyes watching us, whispering about us.
I was used to hearing the gossip of wolf packs. After all, I was fully aware that having a relationship with a former daughter-in-law was something many considered disgraceful.
“I think we should go home, Lucian. I don’t feel comfortable with all these werewolves staring at us.”
She stood up, and I took Selene’s hand, but she almost pulled away. My gaze, however, silently urged her to follow my lead.
As Selene and I walked toward the exit, everyone bowed their heads—as they should. They were paying respect to the Lycan King.
Selene exhaled deeply once we were inside the car. She looked relieved, as if silence had been her only companion all this time.
“When was the last time you went out with my son?” I asked curiously.
“I don’t know. I don’t remember.”
I started the car and began driving. Throughout the ride, I kept thinking—it would be a shame to let my time with Selene slip away. Besides, seeing how low Dexton had treated her stirred my protective instincts.
She didn’t even remember the last time she went out with Dexton.
“By the way, about my offer—with me by your side, you’ll have more power, Selene. Can you imagine how strong you’d be with me?”
“Once again, you’re too confident, Lucian.”
“Of course. And let me remind you, even though you’re a she-Alpha, you have nothing left after being rejected by your own mate.”
“Oh… That’s quite offensive, you know.”
“Well, I didn’t mean it that way. I just wanted you to realize the truth. No matter how powerful you are as a she-alpha, at the end of the day, you’re still a woman. And in this world, women don’t have as much influence as men.”
Selene fell silent, and I reached for her hand, stroking it before kissing it gently.
“I am the right choice for you, Selene. Trust me. You won’t regret choosing me.”
She stared at me for a few seconds before sighing. I could see the hesitation on her face. Slowly, she withdrew her hand from mine as we arrived at her territory.
Once we reached her doorstep, she looked at me and said, “Thank you.”
I touched her cheek, stroking it gently. She glanced at my hand with a look I could only describe as challenging.
“Anytime, my queen,” I replied.
Then, something inside me urged me forward, and before I knew it, my lips met hers. I kissed her deeply, passionately.
My hand rested on her waist, pulling her close until she was pressed against me. When she stepped back, I held her firmly, deepening the kiss.
Selene… She was losing herself in my embrace, and I relished the way her body responded to me—first with hesitation, then with surrender.
“Stop…” she murmured, pushing me away. Her breathing was ragged, and she looked panicked as she touched her lips—the very lips I had just claimed.
I smirked, watching her flustered expression. Her flushed cheeks made her look effortlessly beautiful.
“You seemed to enjoy my kiss,” I teased.
“You should return to your pack, Lucian. I… I’ll give you my answer the day after tomorrow.”
I raised an eyebrow at her words. “And?”
“And until then, I don’t want you to see me. No calls, no texts, no communication at all. I… I don’t want to make the wrong choice, and I need time to fix my heart. No matter what, I don’t want to fail like before. I hope you understand.”
She was so honest, and that only made me admire her even more.
I nodded, letting out a deep sigh. “Alright, I understand. But two days is a long time.”
“Ugh! Please, it’s just two days! You can’t force me to—”
“Alright, alright. Anything for you, my future Queen,” I cut her off smoothly.
It seemed Dexton hadn’t done many romantic things for her, because whenever I acted romantic or spoke sweetly, she would blush and try to hide it. But her expression always gave her away.
“You can go now,” she said.
"Good night, Selene."
"Good night, Lucian."
I turned around, but then, just as quickly, I spun back to her, stealing a swift kiss from her lips and winking playfully.
"That’s for my patience because, for the next two days, I won’t be able to see and talk to you."
She was startled, but I left before she could respond, heading back to my pack—specifically, my home. However, not long after I arrived, Dexton stormed in, furious.
"Are you seriously planning to make Selene your mate? You’re not that stupid, are you?!"
"You heard me correctly earlier, Son. So, accept the reality."
"She’s my ex, Dad! She’s just a worthless b***h who will be of no use to you! Think it through—aren’t you ashamed to take her as your mate when she just divorced me?!"
I fixed him with a sharp glare. "Watch your tone and your words, Dexton. Deep down, you know Selene isn’t like that. You’re only saying this because you’re jealous."
I walked into my office, hearing Harper Reyes, my right-hand man, ask hesitantly, "Is it true, King?"
I clicked my tongue and let out a sigh as I sank into my chair. "Are you also going to tell me not to make Selene my mate, Harper?"
He quickly shook his head. "No, King. It’s just… I fear this will cause a major uproar within the pack."
I chuckled. "Don’t worry, Harper. I’ve calculated everything."
Just then, my phone buzzed with an incoming message. It was from the Council of Elders—an important message, one I had been waiting for:
"Marrying a divorced She-Alpha is unheard of. Either find a new mate or forfeit your throne."
