CHAPTER 41

1074 Words
(Selene’s POV) I barely slept that night. The constant buzz in my head, the words that had been exchanged, and the fury of Dexton still lingered in the air like an oppressive storm cloud. I had never seen him so broken, so disgusted. And it hurt. It hurt to know that I—his mate—was now his greatest enemy. I sat up in bed, pulling the sheets around me as I stared out of the window at the darkened horizon. The moon was low, casting an eerie glow across the forest, and I felt the pull of the pack. The connection, the bond between us, was still there—but it felt so distant. Like a tether that was stretched too far, just barely holding. I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply, trying to steady my breath. My wolf stirred inside me, growling softly, her instincts restless. She could feel the tension too. For years, I had hoped—dreamed, even—that Dexton and I would be able to rebuild what we once had. But now, I saw the reality of it. That was gone. Lost. And Lucian... Lucian was the one who had come to me when I was broken, when I had no one else, when Dexton had rejected me and left me to pick up the shattered pieces of my life. And now… now Lucian was my mate. It should have been a victory, a triumph. But all it did was remind me of how much I had lost. And how much I still had to fight for. A knock at the door broke my train of thought. My heart skipped a beat, and I quickly wiped my eyes before pulling the blanket tighter around myself. “Selene?” Lucian’s deep voice called softly through the door. “Are you awake?” I swallowed hard. “Yes. Come in.” The door opened, and Lucian stepped inside, his tall form filling the doorway. His eyes softened when he saw me sitting there, and for a moment, it was just us in the quiet. He didn’t say anything at first—just walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, reaching out to take my hand. I didn't pull away. "Are you okay?" he asked, his voice low, filled with concern. I didn’t answer right away. Instead, I watched him, taking in his face—the sharp jaw, the dark intensity of his eyes that were so full of… something. Something deep. Something I couldn’t name, but felt when he was near. "I’m fine," I finally said, my voice barely above a whisper. He didn’t believe me. I could see it in the way his brow furrowed, how his lips tightened. He was trying to read me, trying to understand what was going on inside my head. "Selene," Lucian started, his tone more serious, "I know this is hard for you. For both of us." I felt the sharp sting of the words. It wasn’t hard just because of Dexton, it was hard because everything about this situation felt impossible. The pack, the bond, the expectations, my own doubts. I was living in a world that felt like it no longer belonged to me. “I’m not worried about me,” I said, my words quick, defensive. “I’m worried about you.” He looked at me, confused. “What do you mean?” “I’m worried about what they’ll do,” I said, the words tumbling out in a rush. "The Council, Dexton, they won’t accept us. And I can’t stand to see you hurt because of me." Lucian’s hand tightened around mine. “You’re not the one who should be worried, Selene. I can handle the Council. And Dexton, too. I won’t let anyone hurt you.” “But you don’t know what they’re capable of,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “I know exactly what they’re capable of,” he responded sharply. "But that’s why I’m doing this. I’m warning them. I’m not going to back down from this.” His eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that sent a shiver down my spine. "You are my mate now, Selene. And anyone who tries to come between us… they will regret it." I wanted to believe him. I wanted to feel secure, to trust in his promise that everything would be okay. But every fiber of my being told me that it wasn’t going to be easy. This was far from over. I swallowed again, my throat dry. “What if they come after me?” My voice cracked slightly, betraying the fear I hadn’t let myself acknowledge until now. Lucian’s expression softened, his thumb brushing against the back of my hand. "If they come after you, they come after me. And I don’t care who they are, or how many of them there are. They will fall." His words were filled with power, with conviction. And for a moment, I allowed myself to believe him. But then, the memory of Dexton’s face—the disgust, the rejection—came rushing back, and my heart clenched painfully in my chest. “You’re not afraid of losing everything, are you?” I asked, barely able to keep the words from escaping. “Your power… your position. What if Dexton challenges you? What if the Council forces your hand?” Lucian exhaled sharply, shaking his head. “I have nothing to lose, Selene. Everything I care about is right here with you.” His voice was firm, but his eyes… his eyes flickered with something I couldn’t place. I blinked, surprised by his honesty. But I couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that there was more he wasn’t saying. “I don’t want to lose you,” he added, his voice quieter now, almost hesitant. “Not like I lost… others.” I squeezed his hand, leaning in, my forehead resting against his chest. “You won’t lose me, Lucian. I’m here. I’m with you.” For a long time, neither of us spoke. We simply sat in the silence, the weight of our bond hanging in the air between us. A bond that had been forged in the flames of pain and loss. But also one of undeniable strength. And as I closed my eyes, I realized just how much I had to fight for. How much we both had to fight for.
