Anna's POV
I stood half naked at the podium. There were several noises and I couldn't make out the voices. My leg was bruised and the crowd that had formed wanted to devour me whole. I was afraid and restless.
Alpha Jaime entered and there was silence immediately. The elders took their seats, facing me.
“She has sinned greatly. She is a foe to the pack and even death is too good for her. May I propose that she is shredded into pieces?” An elder proposed. The crowd shouted in agreement. A stone hit me and then another. Alpha Jaime raised his hand and the hurling of stones ceased.
“She used to be my mate and that is why I shall spare her unworthy life,” Alpha Jaime said, his voice commanding respect. ''Release her to the angry people. If she survives it, banish her and ensure she never steps her foot here!”
He stood up and left, his presence as cold as ever. The crowd shouted, ready to pounce on me. I was half-dead. I could see and hear but at the same time, I couldn't see or hear.
This was how it all began.
**
It had been nine years since Alpha Jaime made the vow to my father. I was twenty-four, a virgin who had been trained and prepared to serve the Alpha in the future. As the only living child of my father, I took care of him as he was ill. I was the lady of the Greyjoy house.
“Milady!” It was Hailey, my maid. Her voice was extremely sonorous and unique, and I could differentiate it from a thousand other voices. I had been hearing her voice since I was five. How wouldn’t I be able to tell them apart?
I turned towards her nonchalantly, “What is it?”
“Your father…” Hailey was in tears. “Lord Baldwin Greyjoy has given up the ghost!”
My heart skipped a beat as I heard this. Making a little sound, I began to walk towards his room. He had been bedridden for six months, so that was where his body would be. I did not shed a single tear. His death didn’t come as a shock to me. However, I was hurt. I kept it to myself anyway.
There were maids at the front of his door. They were weeping. They all cleared the path for me as I entered to see the lifeless body of my father. The moment I saw this, I realized I had been holding my tears all through. I cried uncontrollably and hearing me cry, Hailey joined me.
“Take heart, Milady. "Lord Baldwin has gone to a good place," Hailey told me. That was the same thing she said when my mother and two brothers died on the same day. That day was an unforgettable one. It was four years ago. My father took me out to learn horse riding, but when we got back in the evening, we found three dead bodies. The bodies of my mother and two older brothers. They had been murdered by assassins.
**
I wore no clothes to grieve. My father was a well-known and respected man, so his funeral was a great one. It would have been better if he died on the battlefield, most of them said. I believe I took the news better than I thought I would. My father, my last remaining family member, was dead, but I chose not to think much of it. I am the last living Greyjoy now. I would be the lady of the house and the commander of our small private army.
“Milady, someone is here from Alpha’s castle,” Hailey informed me.
“I refuse to go out to see the messenger. Let the person come into the hall to see me instead,” I replied. I figured it would be a message of condolence from the Alpha. He didn’t come for my father’s burial even though many believed they were close.
I entered the hall and the messenger was there. He bowed to greet me and I stood before him confidently.
“Alpha Jamie wishes to offer his condolences regarding the death of Lord Baldwin. "He regrets not attending the funeral as well…” The messenger muttered.
“Tell the Alpha I accept his regards. The Greyjoy family is honored,” I said, even though it was insincere. How I wish I could say whatever I wished.
“You can tell him yourself, milady,” the messenger replied with a smile on his face.
“What do you mean?” I asked out of confusion.
“Alpha Jamie has ordered you to prepare for your entry into the castle. "He will honor the old vow he made to your father and get mated to you tomorrow during the full moon,” the messenger said. He sounded quite pleased. A wave of confusion swept through me and I recovered slowly.
“I don’t understand…” I tried again. Even though I knew about the old vow, I wasn’t expecting its fulfillment this soon. In fact, I wasn’t expecting its fulfillment at all.
There will be an envoy to escort you in six hours. He expects you to take care of whatever you need to during this period. Stay safe, Milady, the messenger had finished relaying his message. He bowed and left the hall. As he left, it felt as if he had sapped my energy and took it with him. Hailey ran towards me, smiling.
“I am so happy for you,” she giggled.
“Happy for what?” I turned, my face cold as ice. She took a step back, stunned by my expression.
“Are you not excited?” Hailey asked calmly.
“I am…” I sighed. That was a lie manufactured from the pit of hell.
