Anna’s POV

I twisted and turned on the bed. My mind wandered between love and duty and for once, I questioned my own decision. Perhaps, I should have gone to Alpha Jaime. I should have given him a chance to correct the experience I had on the night of our mating ceremony. Mind made, I rose up from the bed and walked to the door. There were two guards there, obviously to protect me.

“Find my maid. She will be in the maids’ quarters,” I instructed one of the guards. He nodded and ran off to bring Hailey. On my own, I began to select accessories that would match the clothing I had mentally checked. The moment Hailey came, I would send her to inform Alpha Jaime that I would come to his bedroom for my duty as his mate.

“My lady, I am back!” I heard outside the door. It was the guard that went to find Hailey. I opened the door and the guard was right there. However, Hailey wasn’t with him.

“Where is my maid?” I questioned curiously.

“Forgive me, my lady. I went to the maids’ quarters but I was informed that she wasn’t in her room. The other maids thought she was with you,” The guard reported. I was alarmed. I knew Hailey to be someone who obeyed rules. There was no way she was roaming freely in such an ungodly hour. She must have been kidn*pped, I concluded.

“We need to find her!” I said urgently.

“I don’t think you need to worry about it, my lady. She couldn’t have left the castle due to the heavy security. She must still be inside the castle,” The guard told me. “It is not unusual for maids to be missing during bedtime. Most of the time, they are with one of the guards, doing the abomination.”

“What do you mean?” I turned to him, my eyes tensed.

“You know…” The guard was openly blushing. “I believe your maid must have found herself a lover among the guards. Don’t worry, she will be back to her room before sunset and…”

“Shut up!” I shouted, unable to keep my anger inside. The guard panicked and fell on his knees immediately. He looked scared, I was too.

“Please forgive me…” He muttered shakily.

“I detest people who speak carelessly!” I said firmly. “Hailey has been with me since I was five years old. I know her to be someone who follows rules firmly. How dare you insinuate that she has a lover? Even if she does, do you think she would really spend the night with him outside?”

“I was wrong, my lady. Please spare my life,” The guard was still shaking. I took a deep breath and wondered what I would do to him. I decided to spare him in the end.

“Get the captain of the guards at the women's pavilion. His orders are to find out where my maid is immediately. I am sure she has been kidn*pped by someone,” I said convincingly. The guard rushed out to obey my order instantly. I went back to my room and sat down. Now, I pondered on what Laila had told me earlier. Truly, the Alpha’s castle was a warzone. I was sure that one of Alpha Jaime’s concubines had kidn*pped Hailey. I would find out who the person was and crush them.

“I wasn’t kidn*pped…” Hailey told me that morning.

I stared at her, reading her like she was an open book. She averted my eye gaze as she was on her knees. It was six o’clock in the morning and I couldn’t sleep all night as I worried about her safety. Apparently, she came back herself with no proof that she had been maltreated. In fact, her face was glowing. I had worried for nothing.

“I need to know where you slept last night. You have never done this before,” I told her inquisitively. She took a deep breath before she began to explain.

“On my way to my quarters, I saw the flowers blooming in the garden. I went to check them out. I got tempted to look at the beautiful moon so I laid in the garden and stared at the sky. I must have dozed off there. I woke up this morning only to find out that you’ve been looking for me all night,” Hailey explained. I had no reason not to believe her.

“Didn’t you check the garden?” I asked the guard for confirmation.

“We did, my lady,” The guard glanced at Hailey before he added, “I guess we didn’t check it thoroughly.”

I sighed. It was a relief.

“I am sorry, my lady. I made you worry all night,” Hailey looked regretful. That made me feel guilty. She must have slept in the cold all night. I should allow her to get proper rest instead of nagging her so early in the morning.

“Go and rest. I will do the same,” I ended the issue. I stood up and went to my room. I had body pains due to not sleeping that night. I had barely laid on my soft bed when Alpha Jamie came in without knocking. I stood up immediately and bowed in reverence.

“My lord, I didn’t know you would come to visit me…” I said happily. I must have made the right decision by not going to him yesterday. He was right in front of me now. I guess he must have missed you.

“Didn’t you sleep overnight?” He asked.

“I didn’t,” I blushed, believing he cared for me. “I shall send the maid to get tea for us.”

“Don’t bother, I won’t be here for long,” Alpha Jamie replied flatly. “I only came here to tell you that from now on, there won’t be a need for you to visit me. I will always be fine so never come to see me.”

“My lord…” I blurted out, shocked by what I just heard.

“Stop the pretense, b***h!” He shouted, filled with rage.
