Anna’s POV
“My lady… if I may…” Laila tried to tell me on my way back to my quarters. However, I was so angry that I didn’t want to hear it. I eventually stopped at my doorstep. Hailey wasn’t with us, she had left to bring the seamstress.
“What is it?” I asked, anger in my tone.
“The seamstress that was responsible for your dress has been in the Alpha’s castle for ten years. All those years, she has never made such a mistake,” Laila told me carefully.
“And so?” I asked nonchalantly. “The seamstress and Hailey were the only ones who had access to the clothes. Do you mean Hailey would ruin my dress? Do you really think so?”
“I can’t accuse her when I do not know the whole thing that transpired. However…” Laila was saying. However, her words simply irritated me.
“Listen to yourself, Laila!” I snapped at her. “Hailey has been with me since we were both five years old. If something happened to the dress, it was from the seamstress who did a bad job. Stop making excuses on her behalf.”
Laila sighed, “If you say so, my lady.”
I turned towards her, my blood still boiling. I stared at her for a second.
“Do you mean you do not accept what I said completely?” I asked her firmly. “Have I been over-friendly towards you, Laila? Did you forget who I am?”
Laila fell on her knees like everyone else would. With her head bowed, she apologized. I entered the room without accepting her apology. I laid on my bed and buried my face in my pillow. I was just annoyed.
It took a two-hour nap to bring me back to my senses. I sent for Laila again and this time, Hailey was present with the seamstress. I turned to the seamstress first.
“What happened with my dress? Are you aware that I made a total fool of myself today?” I asked her calmly.
“Forgive me, my lady. If you choose to behead me, I would have nothing to say in my defence. However, I plead that you spare me. Such has never happened to me before and I promise it will never happen in the future…” The seamstress must have been crying for the whole two hours I was taking a nap. My heart softened.
“It must be the first and the last time,” I said firmly.
“Yes, my lady. Thank you for showing me mercy!” The seamstress was glad. She left afterwards. I stood up and hugged Laila.
“I’m sorry I snapped at you. I was just pissed off…” I told her calmly. Laila understood and hugged me tighter. I stared at Hailey for a moment and for some reason, she looked so jealous. Growing up with her, I knew that much.
After the whole emotional moment, I sat back with the two ladies I concocted my first plan with.
“Now, I’m sure he hates me more than before,” I said. I had been cheerful all along but a mood swing had come up right now.
“I’m sorry,” Laila held my hands. I held hers tighter.
“You have a lot of ideas, Laila. Come through for me once again,” I said, my voice asking for help. Laila smiled and thought for a moment. As usual, she came up with a brilliant idea again.
“I think you will be able to win Alpha Jamie’s heart with your sincerity,” She said calmly. I didn’t interrupt so she continued. “I heard that for the past three days, he has had no appetite and he only eats enough to survive. I was going to tell his chef to change his diet but now, I have a brilliant idea.”
I had learned to deduce Laila’s words better.
“You mean I should cook for him?” I asked calmly.
“Yes,” Laila replied. “They say the road to a man’s heart is his stomach.”
“But he might not accept that,” Hailey interrupted. “Seeing as he hates you now, I don’t think he would eat a meal you prepared.”
I turned towards Hailey. Her words had pierced my heart. Laila seemed to realize this as she came to the rescue.
“What are you saying?” Laila turned to Hailey angrily. “The Alpha has no reason to hate Lady Anna. What they have right now is a misunderstanding, something every couple has.”
“I’m sorry,” Hailey replied. These days, she seemed to be a shadow of her normal self. She had given me more reason to suspect that something was up. However, I had enough worries. I promised myself that I would deal with Hailey’s issues right after I had reconciled with Alpha Jaime.
“But will he really eat my meal?” I asked carefully.
“I will make him do more than that!” Laila smiled slyly.
**
Laila seemed to have her secret ways of doing things. I wondered how she convinced Alpha Jaime to come watch me cook. Everything was prepared properly. I served the appetizer and he said it was amazing. As for the main meal, I prepared it with Hailey assisting me.
“Did you hear him?” I said quietly to Hailey.
“What?” Hailey sounded lost.
“He said my food tasted amazing!” I blushed. Hailey simply nodded. I went to get plates, leaving Hailey to check the food. When I got back, I served the meal to Alpha Jaime. I watched him fill his spoon and taste the meal. The excitement on his face disappeared as he uneasily swallowed the food.
“What is this?” He dropped his spoon.
I was sure I made no mistake. I was prepared to be the Alpha’s mate right from when I was fifteen and definitely, I took cooking lessons. Even my picky late father loved my meals. I picked up the spoon and tasted the food myself. I spat it out immediately.
It was salty. No, it was as if salt was the main ingredient I used. I couldn’t believe it so I tried again. However, it was the same. How on earth did this happen to me?
“That was nice,” Alpha Jaime smiled. “You just showed me that you have so many creative ways to kill me.”
