Chapter6: Small Experiments

667 Words
Lina sat at her desk in the quiet of her bedroom, her phone glowing softly in the dim light. The app pulsed like a heartbeat, calling to her. She knew she should stop, but curiosity was stronger than fear. She took a deep breath and typed the name of someone she barely knew in her history class: Daniel. The words appeared almost instantly. Daniel had been pretending to know more than he really did in class. Lina blinked, a small laugh escaping her. It seemed harmless enough. She decided to test it further. She typed a few more names; some classmates, a teacher she liked, even a random student she saw in the hallway every day. Each time, the app revealed small secrets: someone faked a smile to hide embarrassment, another student copied homework, a teacher was secretly nervous about an upcoming lesson. At first, Lina thought it was exciting, almost like playing a harmless game. But soon, she noticed tiny changes. When she peeked at her history notes, someone had spilled a drink on the desk. A chair tipped over in the hallway, and a teacher scolded the wrong student. Her stomach twisted. Could it really be the app causing all this? She tried to shake the thought, but she could not. The next morning at school, she watched her classmates carefully. Daniel, the first person she had typed, seemed nervous, avoiding eye contact with everyone. The student who had copied homework fidgeted and stumbled over words when called on in class. Lina felt a pang of guilt. During lunch, Maya plopped down next to her, swinging her backpack onto the floor. “You look like you didn’t sleep a wink,” Maya said, grabbing a fry from Lina’s tray. “What’s going on? You’ve been quiet all week.” Lina forced a smile. “Just tired,” she said. Maya raised an eyebrow. “Uh-huh. Tired or hiding something? You’re acting… weird.” Lina’s stomach tightened. How could she explain this without sounding crazy? “It’s nothing,” she said softly. “Just school stuff.” Maya frowned but let it go. “Okay, fine. But don’t shut me out, Lina. I can tell when something’s up.” After lunch, Lina wandered to the library, hoping for a quiet space to think. She opened the app again, her fingers hovering over the screen. She typed a classmate’s name almost absentmindedly. The secret that appeared was small but personal. She felt her chest tighten. Even minor secrets felt heavy now. By the end of the day, Lina realized the small experiments had consequences she had not expected. A teacher scolded someone unfairly, a classmate tripped over a backpack, and whispers spread through the hallways. Each tiny secret she uncovered seemed to leave ripples behind, touching people in ways she could not control. When she got home, the normal life of her family welcomed her. Her mom was in the kitchen preparing dinner, humming softly. Her little brother Kai raced past with his toy car, crashing into the sofa and laughing. Lina smiled, grateful for the ordinary chaos. “Lina, help me with the salad,” her mom called. “I’m coming,” Lina replied, sliding the phone into her backpack. She needed to focus on family for a moment. That evening, she thought about the day’s events. Small secrets had caused small ripples, but they were still consequences. Lina realized that even minor experiments could have effects she did not fully understand. She sat at her desk later, opening her notebook and writing down what she had learned. The app was powerful, tempting, and dangerous, even in small doses. Lina looked at her phone again. The glow was inviting, pulsing softly, reminding her that it was always there. She knew she should wait, but she also knew that she could not resist exploring it further. Her curiosity burned inside her, stronger than ever. Every secret she uncovered was a choice, and every choice had a price.
