Chapter2: Secrets and Changes

721 Words
Lina woke up the next morning with her phone buzzing on the nightstand. She had dreamed about the app all night. In her dream, people’s faces changed when she looked at them. Some smiled, some cried, and some looked terrified. When she reached out to touch them, everything around her shifted, and she woke up in a cold sweat. She sat up and glanced at her phone. The strange app was still there. The glowing symbol pulsed softly, almost like it was waiting for her. Lina hesitated. She wanted to ignore it, but curiosity won. She tapped the icon. A message appeared: Who do you want to see next? Her heart raced. Lina thought about her classmates. Who had secrets? She typed in the name of Jake, a boy in her science class. Words appeared almost immediately. Lina frowned. It said he had been cheating on the last quiz by copying answers from a friend. She blinked. This could not be real. How could the app know that? She had seen Jake study hard every day. She wanted to tell someone, but a small, uneasy feeling stopped her. What if the app’s secrets were dangerous? During first period, Lina kept thinking about the app and Jake. She noticed him acting strangely. He dropped his notebook in the hallway and muttered something she could not hear. When he walked past her, he avoided her eyes. She felt a shiver run down her spine. Was the app causing this? Could it really change reality? By lunch, Lina was both terrified and fascinated. She went to the cafeteria and quietly watched her friends. Everything seemed normal, but small things kept happening. A tray slipped from someone’s hands and spilled, someone tripped for no reason, and a teacher forgot to mark homework for the entire class. Lina realized that reality itself was starting to bend around her actions. Every secret she uncovered seemed to leave a ripple behind. As she tried to make sense of it, she felt a presence behind her. “Lina.” She jumped and turned. Evan was standing there, hands in his pockets. His dark eyes seemed to look right through her. He was closer than she expected, and for a moment she could not speak. “You need to stop using that app,” he said quietly. “It is not safe.” Lina frowned. “How do you know about it?” she asked, her voice shaking a little. Evan’s expression did not change. “I know because I have seen what it can do. People like that app are watched. And the consequences are worse than you think.” Lina wanted to argue. She wanted to tell him she could handle it, that she just wanted to know the truth. But something in his tone made her pause. There was no joke, no teasing. Just seriousness, and a warning she could not ignore. “You do not understand,” she said finally. “I just… I just want to see the truth.” Evan shook his head. “The truth is not always safe. And some secrets are better left hidden. You need to be careful.” Before she could respond, the bell rang. Evan walked away, his long strides confident, and Lina watched him go. She felt a mix of frustration, fear, and something else she could not name. Her stomach fluttered, and her heart beat faster than usual. The rest of the day passed in a blur. Lina kept checking the app during every free moment. Each secret she uncovered seemed to make small, strange changes around her. People acted differently, small accidents kept happening, and she began to wonder if she could ever stop it once she started. When she got home, Lina sat at her desk and stared at the app. She knew one thing for certain: her life was changing, and she could not ignore it any longer. Every secret came with a cost, and she had no idea what it would take from her next. She looked out her window at the darkening sky. Somewhere out there, Evan was right. The app was dangerous. But curiosity burned inside her, and she could not stop. She had to know what it could do, and she had to know if she could control it.
