Chapter2

A week later, Camila got back home tired. She dropped her purse on the couch and headed straight to the kitchen. She brought out a coffee cup from the cabinet and poured herself coffee from the coffee machine. She sipped her coffee gently while she stared at her neighbour's parrot through the window. She wished she had someone to talk to at that moment. Someone whom she could lean on and cry out her frustrations. Her new job had birthed her more frustrations than she bargained for. With every passing day, came a frustrating experience from her boss. Some days back, Philip asked her out on a date. She was so excited, for her wish had turned out to be a reality. So, out of excitement, she agreed to go on a date with Philip that weekend, not knowing that their plan would be shattered by her boss. Earlier that day at work, Bram informed her of a business trip to France which was to last all through the weekend. She knew that Bram was a hard nut to c***k and that didn't make her job any easier; but to be informed of a business trip, barely two days to the trip, was frustrating at its peak. For God's sake, she had a date that weekend with Philip! Bram was nothing but a complex puzzle on her table, judging from the fact that he hired her despite her inexperience as a secretary - sight unseen by him just based on Lena's recommendation. For the past week, she had struggled to adjust to her new job but it seemed futile. Having Bram as her boss was nothing short of a nightmare. The thought of cancelling her date with Philip, made her boil and pace endlessly in front of the kitchen cabinet, with her palm clutching the coffee cup. She couldn't imagine spending three long days with Bram, on a business trip. Having to deal with his obscene pride and cold attitude was her nightmare. She ground her teeth with hate, as she turned her mind to the reality that she was going on a business trip with her boss, whether she likes it or not. Earlier that day at work, Bram informed her of the business trip to France; as if she was one of his properties that he could take around anytime and anywhere he wanted. He called her into his office "Miss Davis, get your travel documents ready and submit them to Mr. Curt tomorrow" he didn't wait for her response before he continued. " We will be meeting with some of the company's associates in France to deliberate on the ongoing campaign for the movement of the business beyond the borders of Europe. It's going to be a three-day trip, we will be leaving on Thursday." he paused. "Take the day off and report to Mr Curt tomorrow morning with your travel documents" "But …" she complained " the company rule states that one should be notified two weeks ahead of the date for any business trip." She knew she was barely a week old on the job… but she had to say something to make Bram change his mind. "You are right about that, you should have been informed if you were here two weeks ago but since you weren't. That why you are being informed now." he said sarcastically. There was a smirk on his face. Camila's chest tightened in anger. "I have a date this weekend with my boyfriend." There stood moments of silence between them. Her boyfriend? Was Philip her boyfriend? She thought to herself. All that didn't matter, all she cared about was her date. "You can tell your boyfriend, your boss needs you for the weekend. I know that won't be a problem on his part…You have two days to get ready… Let's see if you are any good." His sharp eyes x-rayed her as he spoke. She hated him that moment for his arrogance, for being rude, for being annoying and proud. Who does he think he is? She yelled in her mind. He could sense her frustration, but for an unidentified reason, he seemed to enjoy her anger and frustration. "Meet Mr. Curts, for more details." He left her standing transfixed to a spot at his office in awe. She had so many things to say, and so many questions to ask, but for no reason, she lost her ability to express herself. Too many questions on her mind but she was dumbfounded. Camila took another sip of her coffee gently as she flashed forward to the present. She gulped as she emptied the remaining content into her stomach. She set the coffee cup on the counter beside her and stared into the tin air in disappointment. A trip was all she needed at that moment, but not with her boss. He was the last person she wanted to be around. France had always been on the top list of her MGPBD (must go places before death). But there she was resenting a candid opportunity to travel to France. She wished She could get on a personal trip that would opportune her a safe distance from her present life; from Bram, from Mia. She needed a breathing space. Her solace was the fact, that she wouldn't be on the business trip alone with her boss, Mr Curts, the head of departments would be a part of the trip too. She had just two days left to get ready, So she decided to give Philip a call. She carried the empty coffee cup from the counter into the kitchen sink. She reached into her purse for her phone. After the second dial, Philip picked up the call. "Hey, Philip!" "How are you? I was a little busy when you called." "Is everything alright? " he asked. "Yea, yea! Everything is fine." "Iii…I just… " she stammered "Are you okay?" He asked, feeling concerned. "Yes I'm fine, it's about our date… I won't be available during the weekend." She paused "Did I say something wrong?" He asked anxiously. "No, no… you didn't say anything wrong" She paused. "It's work...I will be on a business trip with my boss all through the weekend" He was silent for a moment before responding. "Okay, we can fix it some other time, then." "That would be great," she felt deeply sorry for disappointing Philip. She ended the phone conversation with him, grabbed her purse from the couch and headed straight into her bedroom. She already had enough for one day.
