Riley Asher
The panic on Sienna's face was evident. Olivia had been missing since last night, and for some reason, I couldn't detect her scent. We had talked to the President, but the useless old man had no idea about Olivia's disappearance.
"I dismissed them early yesterday. Maybe she went somewhere else after school?" a man named Salik said. I presumed he was the assistant coach since I hadn't seen the one who trained Olivia last time. I also heard something had happened to the coach.
"No... she's the type of girl who goes straight home after school. I'm sure she didn't go anywhere else," Sienna reasoned.
We had checked the CCTV earlier, and I was certain Olivia hadn't taken the exit. I hadn't seen her.
My phone beeped in the middle of Sienna and Salik's conversation, so I excused myself and answered the call.
"Were you able to trace her?"
When I couldn't trace her scent, I immediately knew something was wrong. I had marked her, and no matter where she could be, I should have been able to feel that bond, that same connection, but I couldn't. I knew something like this must have been done by something powerful.
"No, but I confirmed their movement. Some were seen in the neighborhood. They're doing it again," Vix replied.
The Walker had been lying low for a while, so seeing them make a move was alarming. Olivia had said we stood no chance against them, and if they rampaged again, I feared for my pack.
"Strengthen the border. Make sure nobody can enter, just in case someone tries to break in. Tell Max to keep searching," I commanded, ending the call.
Salik and Sienna were still talking when I returned. Sienna, now crying, pleaded for help, but Salik appeared unbothered. He felt no sympathy for the old woman; rather, annoyance.
"Olivia told me about these dogs attacking people on campus. What if... Olivia faced the same fate?" Sienna explained.
My brow furrowed as I listened. There were dogs causing trouble around campus? I had been away for a day or two for Alpha duties with the council, and yet things escalated so quickly.
"Ma'am, we've had guards check the entire university, and they didn't find your daughter. She must be somewhere else."
I accompanied Sienna to the exit, feeling hopeless. The university hadn't cooperated well, and their lack of concern seemed suspicious. I wasn't oblivious to the signs that something was amiss among the leadership.
"What dog were you talking about earlier, Sienna? Dogs inside the campus?" I asked, trying to understand the situation.
Sienna nodded weakly. "Isla told me recently about a dog behaving erratically inside the university. I didn't think much of it initially, since stray dogs can sometimes wander around," she sighed. "But isn't it strange for dogs to enter the campus without passing through the main entrance gate? It's heavily guarded."
I furrowed my brow, considering her words. "You're right, that is odd. It sounds like there might be more to this than just a stray dog."
Sienna nodded again, wiping away a tear. "I'm worried, Riley. What if Isla encountered one of these dogs?"
"We'll find her," I reassured her, trying to stay calm despite my own growing unease.
Sienna stared at me with those familiar eyes. "I trusted her to you, Riley. You know what will happen if something bad happens to Isla."
I understood exactly what she meant. After sending her off to the house, I headed back to the pack. Something serious was clearly happening at Sky High.
"Max, have you heard any rumors circulating about Sky High?" I inquired, regretting my recent complacency. If only I had anticipated this turn of events, I would have had Max conduct surveillance like in the past.
"Sienna mentioned that there are dogs wandering around Sky High. I doubt it's just dogs. Could this be the work of the Walker?" I pondered aloud.
It's almost a full moon. Unusual things happen; others go on a rampage, thirsting for something worse. This could be the same as what happened in the past and... now.
Olivia is my burden. I have marked her. If she dies, the prophecy will be hampered—not to mention, she has no descendants yet. The pack's success lies in her hands, and I have to save her no matter what.
"Should we sneak inside Sky High?"
It's almost 3 in the morning, and I still can't find any trace of her whereabouts. But one thing I'm certain of: she hasn't gone far yet. If there's one place I know she'll be, it has to be Sky High.
"There must be a hidden place in that school, somewhere not known by the students," Vix said.
Out of sheer hope, we sneaked into Sky High. The place was eerily silent, with only the sound of crickets to be heard. There were no guards at the entrance when we passed through earlier, which was odd, but maybe they were patrolling the entire school.
"There's a basement in the Nursing Building. We'll try and check what's down there," Max proposed.
We were about to turn right when a strong wind passed through, followed by a foul smell. It was rotten, like dead meat or something.
"What is that smell? It seems like a decaying corpse," Max commented as he covered his nose.
My heart pounded in my chest.
A very familiar feeling surged through my system, one I couldn’t control—fear. Fear for Olivia's life. I let my wolf take control of my senses, following the source of that rotten smell. It led us to the basement.
"Let's make it quick. The potion will wear off any minute now," Max reminded us.
We had all taken a potion that masked our scent, just in case the Valkyries were around. We couldn’t afford to be detected and cause more trouble.
We moved silently through the dark, musty corridor until we reached a large, metal door at the end of the hall. I pushed it open gently, and we slipped inside. The room was dimly lit by flickering lamps, casting eerie shadows on the walls. In the center of the room were two guards and... the School President.
Max nudged me, pointing at the scene before us. My breath caught in my throat.
The guards were feeding something foul—dead meat—to a prisoner slumped on the floor, shackled in chains. But as they shifted, I saw who was tied next to them. Olivia.
Her hands were bound, her face pale and bruised. She didn’t even look up as they passed her a chunk of the decaying meat. Rage flared inside me, but I forced myself to stay calm. We couldn't blow our cover.
"They’re feeding them like animals..." Vix whispered, his voice tight with disgust.
Max clenched his fists. "We have to get her out of there—now."
But we had to be smart. One wrong move, and it was all over.
"Take a piece of this meat as a sign of your obedience to the King. He'll be here any minute, and he'll choose a mate. Pray you'll be lucky," the old man announced with a twisted grin.
King? My mind raced.
"What is that man talking about?" Max whispered, confusion clouding his voice.
But I couldn't focus on the details. My eyes were fixed on Olivia. The pain and disgust written all over her face made something snap inside me. I couldn't let her suffer for one more second. We were going to blow our cover, no matter what.
Before Max or Vix could act, I felt my frustration boil over. "Enough of this!" I growled under my breath, louder than intended.
The guards froze, their heads snapping in our direction. The School President's eyes widened, his smirk faltering. We had been discovered.
"Move!" I shouted, charging forward with Max and Vix by my side. Max was already in motion, launching himself at one of the guards and knocking him to the ground.
Vix tackled the other guard, fists flying, while I headed straight for Olivia. She looked up at me, her eyes wide with hope as I tore the chains from her wrists. "You're safe now," I whispered.
The School President tried to escape, but Vix was faster. He caught him by the collar, slamming him into the wall. "You're coming with us," he growled.
We worked quickly, binding the President and the remaining guard. With Olivia now freed, we wasted no time. Max and I hauled them to their feet, dragging them out of the basement and into the night.
By the time we reached the outskirts of Sky High, we were back on pack territory. We had saved Olivia, and now we had two prisoners—the School President and his lackey—to answer for their crimes.
And the King? He was next on our list.
