The New beginning

629 Words
Amaya stood outside her modest studio apartment, staring at the nameplate that bore her name. It was a surreal feeling—her name in a foreign land. The journey to Germany had been grueling: months of language classes, late-night study sessions for the dental equivalency exams, and endless paperwork. But she had done it. She had carved a space for herself in Berlin, and this was just the beginning. Her work at the local clinic was demanding. Patients were hesitant at first, but Amaya’s dedication and warmth slowly began to win them over. She was proud of how far she’d come and determined to prove that she belonged. --- One Friday evening, after a long week of work, Amaya decided to explore a café she’d noticed near her apartment. It was a quaint little spot, its warm light spilling onto the cobblestone street. She stepped inside, the smell of fresh coffee and pastries instantly lifting her mood. As she waited for her drink, her gaze wandered around the room. That’s when she saw him. Rayan. He was sitting at a table by the window, his head bent over a laptop, one hand resting against his temple. Amaya’s breath caught in her throat. She hadn’t seen him in years, yet he looked just as she remembered—perhaps even better, with a maturity that only time could bring. For a moment, she considered leaving before he noticed her. But just as she turned to go, his head lifted, and his eyes locked with hers. “Amaya?” His voice was unmistakable, laced with a hint of disbelief. She froze, forcing a smile. “Hi, Rayan. Long time.” Rayan stood, his surprise giving way to a warm smile. “What are you doing here?” “I work here now,” she said, stepping closer. “What about you?” “I’m finishing my MBA,” he replied. “Wow, this is unexpected. How long has it been? Eight years?” “Something like that.” He gestured to the empty chair across from him. “Join me?” Hesitating for only a moment, she sat down. The conversation flowed easily, just as it had in her daydreams all those years ago. She told him about her journey to Germany, and he spoke about his experiences in business school. “You’ve really made something of yourself,” Rayan said, his tone genuinely admiring. Amaya felt a blush creeping up her neck. “Thanks. You too.” Just as she was beginning to feel at ease, Rayan said something that made her heart skip. “By the way, you’re from India, right? My girlfriend is too. She’s back home right now, but she’ll be visiting soon. You might even know her—Meera Joshi?” The world seemed to tilt. Meera. Her cousin. Amaya’s mind raced. Did he know? He couldn’t. Meera would have mentioned it if he did. She forced a smile. “Meera Joshi? It’s a common name. Maybe I do.” He chuckled. “She’s amazing. We’ve been together for a while now. I think you’d really like her.” Amaya’s throat tightened. “I’m sure I would.” They talked a bit longer, but the words felt distant. As she left the café that evening, her emotions were a whirlwind. Seeing Rayan after all these years had been unexpected, but the revelation about Meera added a layer of complexity she hadn’t anticipated. For now, she decided, she wouldn’t say anything. There was no reason to disrupt things. This wasn’t about Rayan or Meera—it was about her career, her dreams, and the life she was building in Germany. But deep down, she couldn’t help but wonder how long she could keep the truth to herself. ---
