The following week, Amaya found herself sitting in the clinic’s break room, trying to focus on her notes for an upcoming case presentation. She had done everything she could to settle into her routine in Germany, but her thoughts kept drifting back to her unexpected encounter with Rayan.
When her phone buzzed, she was surprised to see his name flashing on the screen.
Rayan: Hey, I was wondering if you’d be up for exploring the city sometime. I’ve been so caught up with my studies that I haven’t had a chance to see much. It’d be great to have company.
Amaya hesitated. Spending time with Rayan felt risky. The memory of her long-forgotten crush still lingered, and the knowledge that he was dating her cousin made it more complicated. But this was her chance to let the past go and simply enjoy a connection without expectations.
Amaya: Sure, why not? Let me know when you’re free.

Two days later, they met at Alexanderplatz, the heart of Berlin. The towering Fernsehturm, or TV Tower, loomed above them, its needle-like tip cutting through the cloudy sky.
“You’ve been here for a while, right?” Rayan asked as they strolled past street performers and food stalls.
“Almost six months,” Amaya replied. “But between work and exams, I haven’t explored as much as I’d like.”
“Well, let’s change that,” Rayan said, his enthusiasm contagious.
Their first stop was the Berlin Cathedral. As they walked through the grand halls, Amaya found herself relaxing. Rayan’s curiosity and humor made it easy to forget her reservations.
“This place is incredible,” he said, staring up at the ornate dome. “I can’t believe I almost skipped it.”
“Good thing you have a tour guide now,” Amaya teased.
They spent the rest of the day wandering through the city. From the historic Brandenburg Gate to the graffiti-covered remnants of the Berlin Wall, each spot offered a mix of history and culture that left them both in awe.
Over coffee at a small café near the East Side Gallery, Rayan leaned back in his chair and sighed contentedly. “I needed this. Thanks for coming along.”
Amaya smiled, stirring her cappuccino. “Me too. It’s nice to take a break from work.”
Rayan hesitated, then said, “You know, I wasn’t sure if you’d agree. Back in school, we never really talked.”
“That’s true,” Amaya admitted, keeping her tone light. “You were kind of hard to approach.”
“Was I?” he asked, laughing.
“You were popular. Always surrounded by people,” she said, shrugging. “I figured you wouldn’t even notice me.”
Rayan frowned, his expression turning thoughtful. “That’s not true. I did notice you. You were always top of the class, and I remember how you’d bring that giant water bottle to class every day.”
Amaya’s cheeks flushed. “You remember that?”
“Of course,” he said, grinning. “It’s funny how we were in the same space for years but never got to know each other. Life has a strange way of bringing people back together.”
The sincerity in his voice made Amaya’s heart ache. She wanted to tell him the truth about her connection to Meera but held back. Now wasn’t the time.
As they parted ways that evening, Rayan turned to her and said, “We should do this again. I’ve got a lot more of Germany to see, and you make great company.”
Amaya nodded, her emotions swirling. “Sure. Let me know when.”
As she walked home, she couldn’t help but feel the weight of the situation. Spending time with Rayan was like rediscovering an old dream, but she knew the reality was far more complicated.
She reminded herself that she was here for her career, not to rekindle an unrequited high school crush or step into murky waters with Meera. But as much as she tried to focus on her goals, her heart seemed determined to ignore her logic.
