The chill of December settled over Berlin, but the festive air of Christmas brought warmth to the streets. Twinkling lights adorned shop windows, and the scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts filled the air. Amaya and Rayan stood in the middle of a bustling Christmas market, sipping hot cocoa, when Rayan casually brought up an idea that took her by surprise.
“Are you heading home for Christmas?” he asked, his breath visible in the cold air.
“I was planning to,” she replied. “What about you?”
“Same,” he said, a smile tugging at his lips. “Turns out we’re from the same city. Why don’t we fly back together?”
Amaya hesitated for a moment, her mind racing. Traveling together would mean spending even more time with him, and with her feelings already in turmoil, she wasn’t sure if it was a good idea. But before she could think of a reason to decline, Rayan added, “It’ll be nice to have company for the long flight.”
“Sure,” she said finally, forcing a smile. “That sounds great.”
---
The day of their flight arrived quickly. Amaya felt a strange mix of excitement and nervousness as they boarded the plane. The hours flew by in a blur of conversations and shared laughter. Rayan’s ease and warmth made her forget, if only briefly, the complexity of her emotions.
As they landed in India and stepped into the familiar chaos of the airport, Amaya felt a pang of nostalgia. The sights, sounds, and smells of home were both comforting and overwhelming.
“I missed this,” Rayan said, looking around with a grin.
“Me too,” Amaya replied softly.
Outside the airport, their families were waiting. Amaya spotted her father first, waving enthusiastically. She felt a lump form in her throat as she caught sight of her cousin Meera standing beside him.
Meera’s face lit up when she saw Amaya. “You’re finally here!” she exclaimed, pulling her into a tight hug.
Rayan, who had been a step behind, stopped short as he recognized Meera. “You two know each other?” he asked, his voice tinged with surprise.
Amaya’s heart sank. This was the moment she had been dreading.
“Of course we do,” Meera said, laughing. “Amaya’s my cousin. Didn’t I mention that?”
Rayan blinked, his expression a mix of confusion and realization. “No, you didn’t.”
Amaya forced a smile, her mind racing for something to say. “Small world, huh?”
“Very small,” Rayan murmured, his gaze shifting between the two of them.

That evening, as Amaya sat in her childhood bedroom, she couldn’t shake the tension that had lingered after their airport encounter. Rayan hadn’t said much during the drive home, and Meera had been oblivious to the unspoken tension.
Her phone buzzed. It was a message from Rayan.
Rayan: Can we talk?
Amaya’s stomach twisted. She knew this conversation was inevitable, but she wasn’t sure she was ready for it.
Amaya: Sure. Where?
Rayan: Outside your place in ten minutes.
She sighed, grabbing a sweater before heading downstairs. True to his word, Rayan was waiting by the gate, his hands shoved deep into his pockets.
“Hey,” she said softly.
“Hey,” he replied, his tone unusually serious. “Why didn’t you tell me you were Meera’s cousin?”
“I didn’t know how,” Amaya admitted, wrapping her arms around herself. “I didn’t think it mattered.”
“It matters, Amaya,” he said, his voice rising slightly. “We’ve been spending so much time together, and all this while, you knew I was dating your cousin?”
Amaya looked away, guilt and frustration bubbling inside her. “What was I supposed to say? That the guy I had a crush on in high school is now dating my cousin? That I’ve been trying to bury my feelings for you while pretending to be just a friend?”
Her words hung in the air, the weight of them crashing down on both of them.
Rayan stared at her, stunned. “Amaya…”
“I didn’t plan for this,” she continued, her voice trembling. “I came here for my career, for a fresh start. I didn’t expect to see you again, and I definitely didn’t expect to feel this way.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Rayan sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything,” Amaya said, her eyes glistening. “Just… don’t hate me for not telling you sooner.”
“I could never hate you,” he said softly. “But I need time to figure this out.”
Amaya nodded, her heart aching as she watched him walk away. She had no idea what the future held, but one thing was clear: this Christmas wasn’t going to be as simple as she had hoped.
