New beginnings

The months flew by, and Rayan’s graduation day arrived faster than he had anticipated. As he stood on the stage in his cap and gown, his heart felt a mixture of pride and uncertainty. It had been a long, challenging road to complete his MBA, but now, at the culmination of years of hard work, a new chapter was opening for him. His family was there, of course, cheering him on, but his mind wasn’t entirely with them. It wandered to a place he had tried so hard to avoid: Amaya. The kiss they had shared, the way they had both given into the moment only to pull back afterward—it haunted him. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he had missed something important, a decision he hadn’t fully made. But today was about moving forward, he reminded himself. Today was about celebrating his accomplishment. After the ceremony, Rayan’s phone buzzed. He glanced at it, and his heart gave a jolt when he saw it was from his job offer—his first big step into the professional world. He had secured a position with a prestigious consulting firm in Berlin, a company that had been impressed by his academic credentials and network during his time at the university. It was an incredible opportunity, one that he had worked hard to earn. The job would involve traveling between offices, working on international projects, and overseeing business operations across Europe. It was everything he had hoped for, a perfect launchpad for his career. Yet, there was a lingering question in the back of his mind: Would this job, this new life in Berlin, help him finally put things with Amaya behind him? Or would it only amplify the growing ache in his chest? He couldn’t answer that now, not when he had a future to step into. --- As Rayan settled into his new job in Berlin, the city felt different. It was no longer the vibrant place of exploration and freedom it had been when he and Amaya had first arrived. Now, it was a city of responsibility, deadlines, and corporate expectations. His first few weeks were a blur of meetings, paperwork, and adjusting to the fast-paced work culture. He threw himself into his job, diving into consulting projects that took him all over Germany and sometimes beyond. But even in the midst of all the travel and business meetings, he found himself thinking of her. Amaya. He hadn’t seen her in months, hadn’t spoken to her since that day at the café. He respected her wishes, but every time he saw something that reminded him of their time together, a pang of regret hit him hard. He knew he had to resolve his feelings before he could truly move forward, but how could he? How could he forget the way she had looked at him, the way she had kissed him and then pulled away, leaving him with nothing but unanswered questions? One day, as he was wrapping up a meeting in the office, he glanced at his calendar. He had a few days free coming up—a rare break between business trips. Without thinking, he grabbed his phone and typed out a message. Amaya, I know we’ve both been busy, but I was wondering if we could meet up. There’s a lot I need to say. He stared at the message for a long time, his thumb hovering over the send button. The uncertainty of whether he should send it or not made him hesitate. But in the end, he hit send. As soon as he did, he regretted it. What if she didn’t want to hear from him? What if she had completely moved on? What if she was already in a relationship, and he was just the ghost of a past she was trying to escape? But there was no turning back now. He had opened the door, and now he would have to face the consequences, whatever they may be. --- Amaya, meanwhile, had been focusing on her work and personal growth since that day in the café. She had put Rayan out of her mind as best as she could, trying to not let the lingering guilt over the kiss dictate her life. But then, a message from him appeared on her phone, and her heart skipped a beat. Amaya, I know we’ve both been busy, but I was wondering if we could meet up. There’s a lot I need to say. Her fingers froze as she read it. Rayan. A flood of emotions came rushing back, and her breath hitched. She had tried so hard to move on, to concentrate on her career and her life in Berlin, but now, after months of silence, he was reaching out. Should she meet him? Could she meet him and not fall into the same trap she had before? Her mind raced with the options, the possibilities. She had been trying to protect herself, to distance herself from him, but was this an opportunity to get the closure she needed—or would it only stir up old wounds? Amaya took a deep breath and looked out at the Berlin skyline from her apartment window. She knew she couldn’t avoid him forever. But she also knew that this meeting, this conversation, would be a turning point in her life. She had to be ready for it—whatever it may bring. After a few moments of silence, she typed back: Okay. Let’s meet. But only if we can talk honestly. No more games. Her finger hovered over the send button before she pressed it, feeling a mix of anticipation and dread. She had no idea what would happen next, but one thing was certain: Rayan’s decision and hers would finally come to a head. ---
