THE AWAKENING

The temple breathed. That was the first thing Donge noticed as Ifizi led them through its ancient corridors. The walls pulsed with a faint, golden light, like the heartbeat of some enormous slumbering creature. Dust motes danced in the glow, and the air was thick with the scent of old stone and older secrets. Donge followed the old scholar in silence, his hand resting on the hilt of his blade. Beside him, Shazam moved with the same wary tension, his eyes scanning every shadow, every corner. They'd survived the Wastes, survived the hunters, survived Veridia. But this place was different. This place felt alive. "You feel it, don't you?" Ifizi said, not turning around. "The energy. The Aether. It flows through this temple like blood through veins. Your father felt it too, the first time he came here." Donge's throat tightened at the mention of his father. "He trained here?" "He lived here, for a time. Before he found Haven's Rest. Before he found your mother." Ifizi paused at a massive door, its surface carved with symbols that seemed to shift and writhe in the dim light. "This was his sanctuary. His place of power. And now it's yours." He pushed open the door, and Donge stepped into a vast chamber that stole his breath. The ceiling soared above them, lost in shadow, supported by pillars of obsidian that glowed with veins of gold. The floor was a mosaic of black and white stone, depicting a sun rising over a mountain range. And in the center of the room, a pool of liquid light shimmered, its surface rippling with energy. "The Heart of the Temple," Ifizi said, his voice reverent. "A convergence point of the Aether. Your father used it to meditate, to connect with the energy that flows through all things. And now, you will do the same." Donge approached the pool slowly, his heart pounding. The light within it seemed to call to him, to pull at something deep in his chest. He knelt at its edge, his reflection staring back at him from the shimmering surface. "What am I supposed to do?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "Empty your mind," Ifizi said. "Let go of your fears, your doubts, your anger. Let the Aether fill you. Trust the energy, and it will guide you." Donge closed his eyes, trying to do as the old man said. But the anger was still there, a burning coal in his chest. The memories of Haven's Rest, of his father's death, of the Masked Man's laughter. They clung to him like shadows, refusing to let go. "I can't," he said, opening his eyes. "The anger is too strong. It's all I have left." Ifizi's expression was gentle, understanding. "Anger is a weapon, boy. A tool. But it's not who you are. If you let it consume you, you'll become no different from the empire you seek to destroy." Donge looked at his reflection, at the haunted eyes and the hollow cheeks. He saw his father in his features, saw the man who'd died to protect him. And he saw the future, the path that lay ahead, filled with blood and sacrifice. "I don't know who I am anymore," he admitted, his voice raw. "I thought I did. I thought I was just a farmer, a survivor. But now..." "Now you're becoming something more." Ifizi knelt beside him, placing a weathered hand on his shoulder. "That's what growth feels like. It's painful, disorienting, terrifying. But it's also beautiful. Trust the process, Donge. Trust yourself." Donge closed his eyes again, letting the old man's words sink in. He took a deep breath, then another, feeling the tension slowly drain from his body. The anger was still there, a familiar presence, but it no longer consumed him. It was just... part of him. A piece of the puzzle. And then he felt it. A warmth, spreading through his chest, radiating outward through his limbs. The golden light of the pool seemed to pulse in response, rising to meet him. Energy flowed through him, filling the emptiness, healing the wounds he'd carried for so long. He opened his eyes, and saw that his hands were glowing. "Good," Ifizi said, his voice filled with approval. "Very good. You're connecting to the Aether. Now, let it guide you. Let it show you what you need to see." --- The vision came without warning. Donge was no longer in the temple. He stood in a vast, empty plain, the sky above him a churning mass of storm clouds. In the distance, a city burned, its towers crumbling, its people screaming. And at the center of the destruction stood a figure wreathed in golden light. Himself. Donge watched in horror as his own hands raised a blade, his face twisted with rage. The golden light erupted from him, consuming everything in its path. The city fell. The people died. And in the silence that followed, he heard a voice. *This is what you will become if you let the anger consume you.* "No," he said, his voice shaking. "I won't—" *You have a choice, Donge. Embrace the power and become a destroyer. Or master it and become a savior. The path you choose will shape the world.* The vision faded, and Donge found himself back in the temple, gasping for breath. His body was drenched in sweat, his hands still glowing with residual energy. "What happened?" Shazam asked, his face pale. "You were... you were somewhere else. Your eyes, they were golden." "The Aether showed me a vision," Donge said, his voice hoarse. "A future. A dark future, if I let the anger control me." Ifizi nodded slowly. "The Aether reveals truth, even when it's painful. What you saw was a warning. A reminder that power, without control, is destruction." Donge looked at his hands, still faintly glowing. The warmth was fading now, but he could still feel it, a constant presence beneath his skin. The Aether was part of him now. And he would have to learn to control it. "What do I do?" he asked. "How do I master this?" "Training." Ifizi's eyes were bright with ancient wisdom. "Years of training, meditation, and discipline. The Forbidden Technique isn't a weapon you can simply pick up and wield. It's a way of being, a way of living. You must become one with the Aether, let it flow through you as naturally as breath." Donge nodded, accepting the weight of the old man's words. "Then we begin. Today." "Today," Ifizi agreed. "But first, rest. The journey has taken its toll on you. In the morning, we'll begin your training in earnest." --- The next weeks were a blur of pain and discovery. Ifizi was a demanding teacher, pushing Donge to his limits and beyond. He taught him to feel the Aether, to guide it, to shape it with his will. The training was brutal, leaving Donge exhausted and bruised. But with each passing day, he grew stronger. More confident. More powerful. Shazam trained alongside him, his natural talent making him a quick learner. But there was a tension between them, a growing rift that neither of them acknowledged. Shazam was driven by ambition, by a hunger for power that Donge didn't share. And as Donge's connection to the Aether deepened, that hunger became harder to ignore. "You've changed," Shazam said one evening, as they sat by the fire in the temple's main hall. "You're not the same man who crawled through the tunnel with me." Donge looked at his friend, seeing the worry in his eyes. "I'm still me, Shazam. Just... more." "More?" Shazam shook his head. "You're becoming a legend, Donge. A hero. And heroes leave people behind." "I'm not leaving anyone behind." Donge's voice was firm. "You're my brother. That will never change." Shazam was silent for a long moment. Then he smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "I hope you're right. I really do." --- The training continued, and Donge's power grew. He could now summon the golden energy at will, shaping it into shields and blades and bursts of devastating force. But with every new ability came a new challenge, a new temptation. The Aether was addictive. It felt good to use, to feel the power coursing through his veins. And the more he used it, the harder it was to stop. "Dangerous," Ifizi warned him one day, after Donge had spent hours practicing. "The Aether is not a toy. It's a force of nature, and it will consume you if you let it." "I'm in control," Donge said, his voice defiant. "Are you?" Ifizi's eyes were sharp, piercing. "Or is it controlling you?" Donge had no answer. --- The breakthrough came on a night of storm. Lightning split the sky, and the temple shook with the force of the wind. Donge sat in the center of the chamber, the pool of light before him, trying to meditate. But the anger was back, stronger than ever. The memories of Haven's Rest, of his father's death, of the empire's cruelty. They clawed at him, demanding release. "No," he said, clenching his fists. "I won't let you control me." The anger surged, and Donge felt something inside him break. He screamed, a primal sound of rage and grief, and the golden energy erupted from him in a blinding wave. The temple shook. Stone cracked. And in the silence that followed, Donge collapsed, gasping for breath. When he opened his eyes, he saw Ifizi standing over him, his expression unreadable. "Did I... did I hurt anyone?" Donge asked, his voice shaking. "No," Ifizi said. "But you could have. That was a taste of your true power, Donge. Raw, untamed, destructive. You must learn to control it, or it will destroy everything you love." Donge nodded, the weight of the old man's words settling on his shoulders. He'd come so far, but the journey was still just beginning. "Teach me," he said. "Teach me to control it." Ifizi smiled, a flicker of pride in his ancient eyes. "That's what I've been waiting to hear."
