Efa
The following day, Bianca seems more down than the day before.
“It is the archery competitions today. They used to be my favorite, but I can’t watch anymore,” she tells me with a melancholic voice when I enquire about her mood.
“I would be the first one there and get the best seat,” she continues.
She has a way of touching my heart.
“Why can’t you watch?” I ask and she casts her eyes.
“I am an Omega now, remember?”
She says this with such a broken tone, you would swear that I was the Luna or whatever rank she regards superior to her.
I contemplate leaving as she is, but my conscience won’t let me. She is just a kid surrounded by hierarchy egocentric people.
“Did someone tell you that you can’t watch?”
She shakes her head like I guessed. It is the self-condemnation more than anything that is destroying her. I might as well do something about that.
“Unwritten rules can be broken, Dear. Let us go and watch. I like archery too.”
That is the truth, but she is now my mission and there is nothing these wolves can do to me.
Jess and I drag her there. We ignore the curious stares we get. As long as no one told us about it and it is not written anywhere, they can’t charge us with disobedience.
“That is Alpha Drake. He wins every year. He is the best,” Bianca tells us and fills us in on the rules. I can’t help noticing the spark in her eyes. She really loves the sport. Everything about the competition and rules are the same as in the human world.
I watch the so-called champion and the admiration he gets with shock. He is not even close to a champion level. These wolves are either terrible at this, or they just let him win.
“Seriously? That guy is the champion?” I ask Bianca because she seems genuinely impressed by his skills.
“Not so loud. Alpha Drake has won these competitions five years in a row,” she tells me with a hushed tone.
“Argh. Even I can beat him.”
I must have said that too loud because she hushes me and the wolves around turn to look at me.
“Shhh!”
I can’t help but laugh at Bianca. This girl is really jumpy around these so-called higher in hierarchy wolves.
“Any challenger for Alpha Drake?” the officiating Beta calls out.
I proudly lift my hand. “Yes. Me.”
Now everyone turns to look at me with widened expressions while Bianca knocks my side, and Jess shakes her head. This is going to be fun.
“A human slave? This will be good,” Alpha Drake smirks. Now I just have to beat him.
I stand up and remove my apron.
“You wanted a challenger. I am challenging you.”
He makes a face at me and laughs. The crowd laughs with him.
“You have guts, I will give you that.”
“Are you accepting the challenge, Alpha?” I challenge while he shakes his head in disbelief. This is a shock for him. Good.
“Of course. I can’t lose face to a slave now, can I?”
Everyone laughs at that. I don’t care if they think I can’t do it. I have nothing to lose, while he has his ego to protect.
“The nerve of this slave!” someone in the crowd exclaims.
“I told you that our slave is very arrogant,” Princess Hayley tells her friends. “Alpha Drake will show her.”
I ignore her and focus on the Alpha before me.
“What do I win?”
Beating him will be satisfying but I might as well get something out of it.
“You won’t win, Slave.”
This guy is so arrogant. I fold my arms across my chest and press on, “If I do?”
Bianca knocks on my side again. I am guessing that challenging an Alpha is against those unwritten rules she has in her head.
Everyone is now watching our interaction with curiosity. They have never had slaves, and I guess don’t know how to proceed. They won’t do anything until their Alpha approves.
Alpha Benjamin gives the officiating Beta a nod when he turns to him.
“The winner gets five-thousand grand and one night at the Prevan five-star hotel on the 25th of December.”
“Great! A Christmas present. I accept!”
“Not so fast, Slave. You challenged me. There must be punishment for that. I want you to kneel and bark like a dog while being whipped for an hour when you lose.”
I shrug and walk forward. “I accept.”
“No, she does not,” Bianca shouts behind me. “She…she is human and does not know our ways, Alpha,” she adds. She is really nervous for me.
“I do and I accept the condition,” I counter while she grabs my arm.
“You will be whipped. They will not show you any mercy. Don’t do it,” she pleads with me. This kid is really caring and kind.
“Relax, Kid. Beating this Alpha is a piece of cake. I excelled in archery before I could even go to school. I can shoot that arrow with my eyes closed. Mother was a world champion.”
She nods and reluctantly lets go of my arm.
An hour later, I have wiped the floor with the Alpha’s arrogance. He is so mad, he storms away and does not even shake my hand. Such a sore loser.
“You…you actually won!” Bianca can’t believe it. I hope this helps her build her confidence.
“Like I said, Kid. You do you, Omega or not. No one can tell you what you can and can’t do,” I tell her and block the curious stares, including Alpha Benjamin. He has been watching me closely since the incident with Jack.
“Can you really shoot the arrow with your eyes closed?” she asks without acknowledging my words.
“Of course. Want to see?”
She repeatedly nods her head like an excited toddler.
“Okay, you can put a blindfold on me and I will show you.”
The expression on her face when I remove the blindfold is priceless.
“You are amazing!” she exclaims, making me laugh. I have done this all my life. She is by far the best fan I have ever had.
“You must teach me. Please.”
I raise my eyebrow at her.
“Really? But you are an Omega. What if you are not allowed?”
She and Jess laugh until tears roll down their cheeks. I guess we are a trio now.
We are heading back to Alpha Benjamin’s mansion when someone speaks behind us.
“You could have made Alpha Drake kneel, bark like a dog and get whipped like he wanted you to be.”
I turn to find the woman from next door. Even her voice is devoid of life.
“I don’t find humiliating anyone fun, Princess.”
“Lebo,” she corrects. “What do you find fun, Melody?”
“Melody? That is your name?” Bianca asks and adds, “It is perfect.”
I ignore Bianca and focus on Lebo. She has either read my file or did a check on me.
“Call me Slave.”
“I won’t,” she says with her nose up.
Miss depressed is stubborn. I can tell that I won’t win fighting her on this.
“Efa then. I prefer that one.”
“What does it mean?”
“A story of my life.”
She nods. “If you prefer it, that is what I will call you.”
She says this as if we will be interacting a lot. That is not going to happen.
“What do you find fun?”
I look at her lost. Has she forgotten that I am supposed to be a slave here?
“You don’t find humiliating anyone fun,” she clarifies.
Oh, now I get it.
“Killing assholes.”
This usually shuts most people up and repels them from me, but she still has questions.
“Did you really kill forty-five people?”
Definitely read my file.
“Yes. Forty-six with Jack.”
“That is a lot of people,” she mumbles.
I expect her to run off. I want her to because apparently her very powerful and lethal brother hates humans. The less contact I have with her, the better.
“There is one more who needs to join that list and I will be done.”
Jess shakes her ahead at me. This girl still does not run off even after this. It is like I am reading her favorite bedtime story. She is so curious and wants to know more.
“Why did you kill them?” she asks.
“They f****d-up with my world and killed my friends, so I killed them.”
She still does not run off but takes my hand instead. I feel weird the moment our skins touch. It is like we are connected in a way I can’t explain. She frowns while I quickly pull my hand away. I can feel something stir inside me. What the heck is going on with me?
I walk away and leave her standing with Jess, Bianca and Lucy. It feels like something is going to explode out of me.
I am running inside when I bump into Alpha Benjamin.
“I am sorry,” I mumble and try to run off, but he grabs my arm. Damn it!
“Your eyes.”
Damn, damn, damn! This is not good.
I take deep breaths to try and calm the storm inside me. My heart is now beating like a drum. This is bad.
