"Lily, aren't we there yet?"
"Not yet, Just hang on a little bit longer, senorita."
I sighed and tilted back on my seat in the black GLE.
Alert, Lily could speak Italian.
My eyebrows furrowed and I clenched my fists as the aching of the past devastated me all of a sudden. Memories flashed through my mind. my mother, the accident, the betrayal. It all felt so fresh and heavy, as if I felt like I was still trapped in that moment. I looked out the window and the cold air tousled my hair around, making me feel a little bit better.
We had just got off the plane to Rome twenty minutes ago and we had been driving ever since, The roads extended endlessly, it felt like the ride was forever, much like my thoughts, and the longer we drove, the more restless and helpless I became. The ride was way too long in my opinion and Lily was persuading me to be patient but I knew I wouldn't. At least, not for long.
The driver took a turn and Lily exhaled as she typed away on her tablet. Perhaps our destination was very close?
"Lily," Just as I spoke, the driver pulled over in front of a tall gate.
"We're here, miss."
I unlocked the door and pushed it open. I could see only the perch of a light blue roof beyond the gate. I wondered what more it would hold. All of a sudden a sense of dread crept up my spine. What else was waiting for me behind those walls?
Lily exchanged words with the driver in Italian and collected the car keys. The driver bowed to us and then left.
"What did he say to you?" I asked Leah as she began to unlock the gate.
"Just that the house has been stocked up with the food and stuff you'll need to stay for a couple of weeks."
I stepped into the gate after Lily unlocked it and was astonished by the design of the house. It had a reasonable linger of medieval on the roof and walls of the house, It looked so old, more like something that had been standing there for centuries, yet somehow it felt just like the perfect hiding place. Maybe it was because, just like me, it wore a mask.
Lily opened the house and when I stepped in, I saw that the designs were modern. Tiled floors and a white pure vase sitting by the top corner of a cupboard. The walls were also caramel-coloured which gave the house a stylish appeal. I guessed that was what the actual owner of the house was opting for. It also counted as the perfect hide out because the outside of the house seemed older than it actually was.
Lily and I freshened up and relaxed but it was only when I was in front of the tv that I realized that I could not 'relax'
Every car accident scene in the movie sent my heart racing, my chest tightening as memories from that night resurfaced. The screeh of tires, the impact and also my grand father’s last words echoing in my head...
I turned off the tv and went to my room's closet to put on a seductive black dress. I applied my red matte lipstick and woke Lily up.
It was time to escape, even if it was temporary. If I couldn’t stop the torment inside me, I’d at least find a way to drown it out before it takes over me.
"Signorina…" Lily whispered lousily.
"Wake up, we're going to a club."
"A club? Why…"
I grabbed the tip of Lily’s nose until she was screaming because of the pain.
I sighed and let go off her nose. "To find a husband, of course! You should know that already." I said as I turned away and swayed my hips out of the room.
But deep down, I knew that wasn't the reason. I wasn't going in search for a husband—I was looking for an escape, a distraction to get my mind away from these shits, anything to make me forget.
I knew damn well I wouldn't be able to relax at all. So instead of sitting around waiting for time to pass, I may as well proceed to carry on the second task Marcel gave me and get done with it. I couldn't just do nothing. I had to do something that would get my adrenaline pumping and free. Only that way would I feel less about myself and my existence.
I went to the living room and clutched the file Marcel gave me before. I flipped it open and the first name and picture that popped up was the same as the name and picture I had in my mind's eye.
"What did Marcel say about that other guy?"
I was in the car with Lily in the driver's seat scrolling away on her tablet. Right in front of us was a classy club with a 'Blitz’ label not far from it.
"We're in the right place, signorina. This is the place Andrew Miller frequents."
A smile crossed my lips, A dangerous, reckless smile. The kind that comes before something truly destructive. I had a feeling of domination crossed through me as though I had won a million dollar cheque.
"Then there's no time to delay,"
As I opened the door, Lily said, "I'm just worried he'll be a cheater. Frequenting a club like this one is a red flag."
"As long as getting him will help me achieve my purposes, I don't care what he does."The words felt recessed as I said them. It wasn’t about Andrew Miller. It was about filling the emptiness inside me, no matter the cost.
I opened the car door and stepped out despite Lily protests.
As she left to park the car, I went to the club's security who immediately insisted I bring an invitation card. They had an air of hostility about them which I knew I couldn't wing with just a smile. I could tell they weren’t the type I could charm with a little smile. I glanced around, my mind racing for a solution,
However, when a tall fit man in a suit walked in front of me with an invitation card between his index fingers, I channeled my inner w***e and instantly closed the distance between us and placed an arm around his shoulder.
The soft smell of Alcohol and ice filled my nose but I ignored it and spoke to the bouncers with a fake smile plastered on my cheeks. "I'm with him!"
A moment of silence passed before I felt him step away from me, causing my arm to drop to my side. Embarrassment shot through me, but I masked it with a smirk.
"She's not," Just that simple phrase he said, had me feeling like a blank wall.
In my twenty five years of living, never have I been rejected before. But when he turned around and I saw a glimpse of his face, I immediately understood the reason behind his action.
