Chapter 26: The Truth Revealed Sarah's words hung in the air like a challenge. "Our family's business empire was built on deceit and corruption. Our father, Richard Langley, was involved in some shady dealings." James's face went white as the truth began to unravel. He knew he had to come clean, for Max's sake and for his own. "It's true," James admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "I've been trying to protect our family's reputation, but I realize now that was wrong." Victoria's eyes narrowed. "You'll ruin us, James. You'll destroy everything we've worked for." But Sarah stood firm. "We can't keep living a lie, Victoria. We have to face the truth and make things right." Max looked at his father, confusion and hurt in his eyes. "Why, Dad? Why did you lie to me?" James took a deep breath. "I was trying to protect you, son. I didn't want you to know the truth about our family's past." But Max shook his head. "I'm not a child, Dad. I deserve the truth." Emily put a hand on Max's shoulder. "We all deserve the truth. It's time we faced it, no matter how hard it is." And with that, the room fell silent, the weight of their secrets and lies hanging heavy in the air. Chapter 27: The Weight of Secrets James sat in his study, surrounded by the trappings of his success. But despite the plush leather chair and the rows of expensive books, he couldn't shake the feeling of emptiness inside. The secrets he had kept for so long were finally out, and it was a relief. But it was also terrifying. He had no idea how Emily would react, or if she would ever be able to forgive him. Just then, the door opened and Emily walked in. She looked tired, but her eyes were clear. "James, we need to talk," she said. James nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation. "I know. I'm so sorry, Emily. I was wrong to keep those secrets from you." Emily sighed. "I know you were. But I need to know why. Why did you feel like you had to lie to me?" James took a deep breath. "I was afraid of losing you. I was afraid that if you knew the truth, you would leave me." Emily's expression softened. "I might have been angry, James. But I would never have left you. You're my husband, and I love you." James felt a wave of relief wash over him. Maybe, just maybe, they could get through this after all. But just then, Victoria walked into the room. "I don't think that's true, Emily," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "James has been lying to you for years. How can you trust him now?" And with that, the fragile peace was shattered.
