Chapter 8: A Family Affair
As James finished his story, Emily saw a figure approaching them. It was a young woman with a warm smile and a little girl by her side.
"James, I see you're finally telling Emily about Sophia," the woman said, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
"Rachel, this is Emily," James said, standing up to greet her. "Emily, this is Rachel, Sophia's mother and my...friend."
Rachel's eyes locked onto Emily's, and she smiled. "It's nice to finally meet you, Emily. James has told me so much about you."
Sophia, who had been quietly observing the scene, suddenly piped up. "Mommy, can I go play now?"
Rachel nodded, and Sophia ran off towards the playground.
"I'm sorry about this," Rachel said, turning to Emily. "James and I, we're not together, but we co-parent Sophia. We're friends."
Emily nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. "It's okay, I understand."
As they talked, Emily realized that Rachel was kind and genuine, and Sophia was a sweet and lively child. She saw the way James interacted with his daughter, the way he looked at her with so much love, and her heart melted.
Just then, a tall, dark-haired man approached them. "Hey, James, Rachel, what's going on?"
"This is Alex, Rachel's fiancé," James explained, shaking Alex's hand.
Alex smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Nice to meet you, Emily. Welcome to the crazy family."
