No Return

Alessia didn’t move immediately. She stood there, facing him— the man who had just offered her something that sounded like power… But it felt like a risk. The silence stretched. Not uncomfortable. Not awkward. Just… heavy. Luca watched her. Patient. Like he already knew her answer. Like he had seen this moment before. “What happens if I don’t?” she asked quietly. For the first time… His gaze shifted slightly. Not away from her. But through her. “Then nothing changes,” he said simply. The honesty in his voice unsettled her more than anything else. “You go back to your life,” he continued. “The same life. The same man. The same pain.” Each word landed carefully. Deliberately. “And eventually,” he added, “you’ll learn to accept it.” Her chest tightened slightly at that. Accept it. Something about that word… Something about the idea of staying the same— Felt worse than any risk. “I already accepted it,” she said, though her voice was quieter now. Luca tilted his head slightly. “No,” he replied. Just that. Simple. Certain. And somehow… He was right. Alessia’s fingers curled slowly at her sides. “I signed the divorce papers,” she said, almost as if reminding herself. “You did.” “I didn’t fight.” “You didn’t need to.” That made her pause. “Why are you doing this?” she asked again, more directly this time. This time… Luca didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he took another step closer. Close enough now that she could see the faint details in his eyes. The stillness. The control. The quiet intensity. “You’re asking the wrong question,” he said. Her brows pulled together slightly. “What is the right one?” His gaze dropped—just briefly—to her lips. Then returned to her eyes. “Ask yourself why you came here.” The question hit differently. Not sharp. Not loud. But… honest. She didn’t answer immediately. Because the truth… Wasn’t comfortable. She thought about it. The divorce. The message. The mirror. And him. The way he looked at her and saw something… Not weak. Not broken. But it is possible. Her throat tightened slightly. “I don’t want to be… invisible anymore,” she admitted. The words came out softer than she expected. But they were real. Luca didn’t react outwardly. But something in his gaze shifted. “Good,” he said. She frowned slightly. “That’s it?” He took another step closer. Now the distance between them was minimal. “That’s the beginning.” Her pulse quickened just slightly. “What do I have to do?” she asked. This time— There was no hesitation in her voice. And Luca noticed. A faint satisfaction passed through his expression. “First,” he said, “you stop seeing yourself the way they taught you to.” Her brows drew together. “They?” “People like him.” The way he said it— It wasn’t loud. But it carried weight. “They told you what you are,” he continued. “And you believed them.” Her jaw tightened slightly. “You’re wrong,” she said. But even as she said it— Something inside her resisted. Luca studied her closely. “No,” he replied. Then— Softly. Almost dangerously: “I’m not.” Silence. Her heart beat slower now. More controlled. More aware. “What if I fail?” she asked suddenly. A real question. A vulnerable one. Luca didn’t answer immediately. Then— “If you fail,” he said, “Then you were never ready.” The words should have hurt. But they didn’t. Instead— They challenged her. Alessia exhaled slowly. “I’m tired of being the woman who wasn’t enough,” she said quietly. Something in Luca’s gaze darkened. “Then don’t be her anymore.” Simple. Direct. But impossible? Maybe. “Tell me what I need to do,” she said. There it was. The decision. The surrender. Luca studied her for a moment longer. Long enough to confirm something only he could see. Then finally— He turned slightly. Gesturing toward the space behind him. “Come.” Alessia hesitated for only a second. Then— She followed. The room she entered next was nothing like the outside. Dim. Controlled. Structured. Not just a space. But a system. “You’re going to rebuild yourself,” Luca said. She turned to face him. “Physically. Mentally. Emotionally.” Her heart began to beat a little faster now. “Starting today.” He moved toward a table. Picked up a tablet. And handed it to her. “Your schedule” You can contact “Matteo, Luca’s right-hand man” if you need help. She looked down at it. And her eyes widened slightly. Workouts. Therapy sessions. Speech training. Lifestyle restructuring. It wasn’t just a transformation. It was… a complete reinvention. “This is extreme,” she said quietly. Luca’s gaze didn’t waver. “Transformation always is.” She looked back at the schedule. Then at him. “And if I quit?” A small pause. Then— “You won’t.” Something about the certainty in his voice made her feel seen. Not judged. Not doubted. But I understood. Alessia swallowed slightly. And for the first time— She didn’t feel small. She felt… challenged. “I don’t know who I’ll become,” she said. Luca stepped closer again. “That’s the point.” Her breath slowed. “You won’t recognize yourself at first,” he continued. His voice dropped slightly. “And neither will they.” Something shifted inside her. Not loudly. Not violently. But permanently. “Start tomorrow,” he said. She nodded slowly. Then hesitated. “Wait.” He paused. Looked at her. “What is this to you?” she asked. Silence. Longer this time. Then— Luca said: “A beginning.” But his eyes told a different story. One she didn’t fully understand yet. As Alessia stepped back into the elevator later that night… She stared at her reflection again. But this time— She didn’t see the woman who was left behind. She saw something else. Something forming. Something dangerous. Something unknown. And for the first time in a long time— She wasn’t afraid of it. She was ready to become one.
