Calvin's P.O.V
The ladies in the room screamed at the sudden intrusion, as the shadowy figure entered the room. He was wearing a long dark cloak that reached the floor and it had a hood that covered his head and came down halfway over his face.
"How did you get in here?" I demanded with a growl escaping from my lips.
"I can go anywhere I please with my powers at their strongest tonight." growled the shadowy figure.
"Get out!" I ordered in my Alpha tone, but it had no effect on this figure.
"I have been waiting for this night to exact my revenge on you Calvin," the shadowy figure spat my name like it was poison.
I started for him there was no way I was going to let this unknown figure harm my family. When I was about ten feet from him, I prepared to shift and leap at him. I was going to rip him apart, but all of a sudden I could no longer move. It was as if I was frozen, I couldn't even speak. With my eyes locked on to my target, I could see he had his hand raised apparently in defense, keeping me paralyzed in place by some kind of magic. The man in the cloak smiled an evil smile, it was all I could see of his face.
"It would seem my waiting has paid off. I hear a pup has been born tonight. It couldn't be more perfect," he said with a smirk, his voice gravelly. "I'm going to enjoy watching you suffer."
"Don't you dare touch my family!" I wanted to yell but nothing came out. I tried to look around to where my mate was with our pup, but they were just out of my line of sight. The handmaiden and midwife appeared to be frozen where they stood as well. There was nothing I could do, my wolf howled within me, trying desperately to get out. I could feel the clawing and gnashing of my wolf as he became more and more frantic. It felt like my chest was going to explode, but to no avail. There was nothing I could do.
Amelia's P.O.V
I watched in horror as the shadowy figure entered the room. I couldn't make out what was said between him and Calvin, it was like my ears weren't working. I saw Calvin speed toward the intruder only to stop mid-stride. What was happening? I looked over at my midwife and handmaiden and they too appeared unable to move.
All of a sudden, the cloaked man was beside me and I realized I couldn't move either. I couldn't scream. Who was this man? Why was he here?
"Ah, a girl is it?" he made the assumption based on her pink blanket.
"Leave her alone!" I shouted, apparently in my head because no sound emerged from my mouth. I wanted to run, I wanted to protect my new pup from this evil man in front of me.
"It's perfect, even better than my original plan." said the cloaked man in a voice that made my skin crawl.
"My curse for you child, is going to be wicked and heartbreaking, it's wonderful" he said with glee, as if it wasn't terrible. I heard him as he continued and it chilled me to the bone. As he was speaking, a purple orb was materializing in his hands.
"On your eighteenth birthday your wolf will not be able to join you, she will be blocked from you. Your true mate will recognize you which will be his torture. Your torture will be that you won't be able to feel the bond between true mates and will not recognize him in return. Any males born to you will either be stillborn or crippled so as not to produce any strong male lineage. Being that you are a female and the eldest, this curse will be passed on to every eldest female descendent." The cloaked man's voice was filled with hatred as he finished. The purple orb that had formed in his hand at his words floated above Adeline.
I watched what was happening in great distress. My wolf was trying to break free, howling and growling. It was as if time was moving slowly as I watched the orb descend ever closer to my precious Adeline. My wolf whined as even she realized she could do nothing. It got closer and closer to her tiny arm that was free of her blanket. Just as the orb made contact with Adeline's forearm there was a bright flash that lit up the entire room. A purple glow came from the point of contact with Adeline's arm and it slowly dimmed to reveal the mark of the curse. It was a perfect purple circle outline with a shadow of a wolf howling inside the center of the circle and about the size of a small coin.
The cloaked man evaporated into a cloud of thick purple smoke and sped out the window. An eerie laugh echoed through the room. As soon as he left, everyone was able to move again. I gasped for air as if I'd been unable to breathe. Calvin collapsed to the floor, but quickly recovered and sped over to the bed where I was sitting with Adeline. Calvin looked over us as if to determine any injuries when his eyes fell to the mark on Adeline's arm. He touched her arm softly where the mark was and looked up at me with his shoulders slumped and his eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"What happened?" Calvin asked me. I guess my ears hadn't been working right earlier, it seemed the cloaked man had also made it impossible for anyone to hear what he was saying to anyone else, along with the paralyzing spell.
My eyes instantly filled up with tears that spilled over and ran down my cheeks. A few dripped from my chin and onto Adaline. She flinched a bit when they hit her, and her arm flung out as it startled her.
"It's awful, Calvin," I said and continued to tell him what had happened.
Calvin's normally green eyes turned black with rage as I finished telling him, but they quickly softened into sadness again.
"Oh Calvin, ....what...are....we going.....to do?" I sobbed. "This should... have ...been the happ... happiest night... of our lives....and now...oh Calvin." I just sobbed some more.
"We'll figure something out, we have to," he said to me, trying to reassure me.
I just continued sobbing while trying to nurse Adeline. She seemed so content, unaware of the terrible tragedy that had just occurred.
