Chapter 4

1925 Words
Canon jolted awake, gasping for air as his heart pounded wildly in his chest. He had just woken up from a nightmare that left him trembling with fear. In the dream, he had seen Renzo, the son of Alpha Julius, the ruler of the rival Sardis kingdom, transform into a savage werewolf, snarling and snapping his jaws as he lunged towards Canon with razor-sharp claws. Canon could feel the cold sweat on his forehead as he tried to shake off the terrifying image from his mind. He could still recognise his elder brother's friend, who was no stranger to the family. Memories of times spent with him playing, more than four years ago, are still fresh in his head, as he finds it hard to understand why the Sardis became suddenly hostile towards his family. As he looked around his dark bedroom, Canon realized that it was just a nightmare. He let out a deep sigh of relief and tried to calm himself down. But as he turned to the side, he saw Renzo standing at the edge of his bed, his eyes glowing yellow in the darkness. Canon's heart skipped a beat as he recoiled in horror. "Uncle Renzo?!" Canon gasped, his voice shaking with fear. "W-what are you doing here? Renzo didn't say anything. Instead, he took a step forward, his claws glinting in the moonlight that streamed through the window. Canon scrambled back, pressing himself against the headboard as he desperately searched for a way to defend himself. But just as Renzo was about to pounce, Canon cried out. Mom!" his voice trembling with fear. "Mom…!" Magna, Canon's godmother, burst into the room, her eyes darting around frantically as she tried to figure out what was happening. It's not strange for Canon to call Magna his mum as she has been the one taking care of him since his real mother, Jane Sardis, left him with her at age two. The only problem is that he doesn't know his biological father nor who his real family are. "What's wrong, Canon?" she asked, her eyes wide with concern. "It was Uncle Renzo," Canon said, his voice shaking. When she saw Canon's terrified expression, she rushed over to his side, her arms wrapping around him protectively. "There is no one here" she replied, scanning through the lad's room. "It's okay, Canon," she whispered soothingly, her voice calm and reassuring. "It was just a bad dream. Renzo is not here. Look, he's not in the room." As Magna pointed to the empty space where Renzo had been standing, Canon's eyes followed her gaze, and he saw that Renzo was not there. He let out a shuddering breath, his body relaxing as he realized that it had all been a terrible nightmare. Renzo was ruthless and wicked enough to make a ten-year-old boy scared to death, just by the lad looking at his face. "Don't leave me," Canon cried out. "I'm still here with you, Canon" Magna reassured him as she held him tight towards herself. Slowly, Canon began to calm down, his breathing returning to normal as Magna held him close. He glanced at the window, wondering if Renzo had really been there or if it was just a figment of his imagination. He knew that the rivalry between their kingdoms was intense, but he never imagined that it would invade his dreams. As he drifted back to sleep, Canon made a mental note to talk to his father about the nightmares. He is Alpha Arthur's most precious treasure, as the king doesn't joke with him, even if he is not his real father. "I will get you the crown after you age thirteen, when you can shift into your wolf nature." "No, I need it now, father", Canon had told Arthur in one of their numerous conversations when he was still aged nine. Canon knew that the Bradds needed to find a way to resolve their differences with the Sardis without resorting to violence, and he hoped that the nightmares were not a sign of things to come. ******* "It was amazing to watch them work," Alexis said, her eyes shining with excitement. "They were so focused and precise in their movements. And the jewelry they were making was absolutely stunning." In the dining room, Alexis was telling a story about her recent visit to the omega sub-pack, not far from the palace, where she had met a group of skilled craftspeople who were working on creating beautiful handcrafted jewelry. Magna nodded in agreement. "I've heard about them. It would be wonderful to …" Her statement was interrupted by the loud noise that greeted the diners. It was Arlem. Arlem pushed open the doors to the dining room, feeling a sense of relief wash over him as he stepped inside. As he looked around the room, he saw his wife Alexis sitting at the table, her face lit up when she saw him. His mother, Magna, was also there, her hair pulled back in a tight bun as she talked to his father, Arthur, who was seated at the head of the table. "Arlem, you're back!" Alexis exclaimed, standing up from her chair and rushing over to embrace him. "How was your trip? Something stole her gaze as she pressed towards Arlem. "What happened? Did you fight anyone?" "There are cuts and bruises all over your arm and face", Alexis probed, knowing fully well that those were not marks gotten from just falling. Alexis was one of the warriors of the Bradds before she became Arlem's mate. Her quick discernment of the fight marks was not a strange one to Arlem. Even the discovery that they were both mates, destined together by the moon goddess, happened at an unusual place: at the war front. The line - I think you might be my mate, was the word Arlem shot out before his love affair with Alexis officially took off. ****************Flashback*************** Arlem was still catching his breath, his fur matted with sweat and blood after Bradds' battle with the Bilal wolf pack over some border issues, led by Drake, their beta, as their Alpha had been seriously sick for days. He was looking around after the last of their enemies had retreated, making sure that his pack had made it through the battle, when his eyes fell on a she-wolf a few feet away. Her body was bruised and battered, and her fur was matted with blood, but even in her weakened state, she was still the most beautiful thing Arlem had ever seen. As he approached her, he felt a pull from within him, something deep and powerful that he couldn't explain. "Are you okay?" he asked, his voice soft and hesitant. The she-wolf looked up at him, surprise and relief written all over her face. "I'm okay," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Thank you for asking." As Arlem heard her speak, he felt a spark of something powerful and undeniable. It was like nothing he had ever felt before, a deep and unshakeable connection that he knew could only mean one thing. Almost immediately, the she-wolf felt a deep resonance in her heart. It was like a song that had been playing in the background of her life, suddenly becoming louder and clearer than ever before. She had heard of the concept of "mates" before, but had never believed it could happen to her. But as she stood there with Arlem, she knew deep down that he was the one she had been waiting for. "I think… I think you might be my mate," Arlem said, his voice trembling with emotion. The she-wolf looked at him, surprise written all over her face. "Your mate?" she repeated, as if trying to make sense of what he had just said. Never had she expected to be mated with the king's son in her wildest dreams. Arlem nodded, his heart beating faster with every passing moment. "I feel it, deep down. Do you feel it too?" The she-wolf hesitated for a moment. It was such a powerful feeling, so overwhelming and all-encompassing. But as she looked into his eyes, she knew that she couldn't deny it any longer. But then she nodded. "Yes," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I feel it too." They stood there for a moment, their eyes locked in a deep and meaningful gaze, as they both tried to process what was happening between them. The sound of the wind rustling through the trees and the faint chatter of their fellow comrades were the only sounds that could be heard. Finally, the she-wolf spoke again. "My name is Alexis," she said. Scanning through the beauty before him despite her wounds, "I'm Arlem," he said, feeling a sense of connection and comfort with her that he had never felt before. "I know you're Arlem" Alexis stated. "Who would not know the king's son?" she reinforced, forcing out a smile on Arlem's face. Arlem and Alexis felt their bond growing stronger with each passing moment, even after that encounter. ************Flashback Ends********* "Arlem, what happened?" Alexis asked, still confused why Arlem had those cuts on his arm. Arlem took a deep breath before speaking, realizing that what he was about to say would shock his family. "I need to tell you something all," he said. "At the North Pole, I encountered the Luna of Sardis Kingdom." Magna's eyes widened in surprise. "The Luna of Sardis Kingdom?" she repeated. "What was she doing there?" "Aris?"! With a look of amazement, Arthur exclaimed. Arlem's expression turned grave. "She came to avenge the death of her daughter, who died in the war." he said. "I tried to stop her" "I had no choice but to defend myself, and in the end, I was forced to kill her as well." There was a moment of stunned silence as his family processed the news. Alexis was the first to speak. "We need to be prepared for any repercussions." "No," "You should have known better not to fight her. You know this woman, Arlem" Magna, burst out, turning her face towards Arlem. "Mum, don't start " Arlem stated, his voice laced with every tone of authority. "I just want you to…" Magna was still trying to make her point clear before she was cut short by Arlem's unexpected action. *GBOOSH* "Enough Magna!" Arlem instructed strongly, sending a shiver to the diners as he hit hard on the wall. "The deed has been done. There is no time for all that." Alpha Arthur was not surprised at his son's outburst as he needed that firmness if he intended to last longer as an Alpha when he took over from him. "Killing Aris has consequences of its own. It could potentially spark a war between our kingdoms," Arthur stated. "Go and rest, boy. There is a lot to prepare for " he advised. Arlem made an attempt to leave when Alexis placed a hand on his shoulder. "We'll figure this out together, babe," she said. "We'll make sure that our kingdom is protected and we will do the right thing." A burning bush! Who would love to experience another war after the loss of lives and properties in the previous? A war propelled by revenge and bitterness projects greater brutality than any with lesser motivation. This moment, Renzo has always longed for, even an opportunity to lay hold on the power of the legendary Bathury Seal to rule the four kingdoms, only if he can fulfill its requirements.
