5 The following morning I hurried round the corner to call in at the shop before going to work. Maud was busy with a delivery and I couldn’t wait around as I had to return home to collect Poppy and get to the café where Hannah would be opening up. It was clear that she was bursting to talk to me, but the café was busy and we didn’t have time to chat until after lunch. When we finally sat down together for a coffee, Hannah came straight out with a plan she had been dreaming up. ‘You met the man who’s moved into the lane, didn’t you?’ she asked me. I nodded cautiously, wondering where this was going. ‘And you saw the woman in the river before they pulled her out?’ Again, I nodded. ‘So you had a clear view of her?’ ‘I saw the back of her head, and I called the police straight away.’ ‘
