24 ‘It’s such a shame about Adam’s mother,’ I said quietly to Hannah at work the next day. In common with most weekday mornings, we had been fairly quiet once the early breakfast rush was over. Having finished cleaning up, we were sitting down to enjoy a pot of tea for two, and were ready for a natter. ‘What about her?’ Hannah asked. I repeated what Adam had told me the previous evening, and Hannah stared at me in amazement. ‘You do realise what this means?’ she asked. ‘That Richard’s wife isn’t going to go back to him, ever.
