27 That evening I phoned Adam. Either Richard hadn’t given me the correct number, or there was a problem with the line. Whatever the reason, the number turned out to be unobtainable. After trying to call him on and off all evening, I gave up. I still had Adam’s address and on looking it up discovered it was close to a tube station. The following day was Thursday, which wasn’t usually very busy at the tea shop, and that gave me an idea. Inventing an excuse about my mother being sick, I asked Hannah for the day off work.
