When I discussed what was on my mind with my friend, Hannah accused me of jumping to conclusions. At first she insisted that Adam must have been mistaken in thinking he had seen his mother. The idea that Steve had come to Ashton Mead pretending to be looking for Isobel when he knew perfectly well where she was, made no sense. Admitting that it was unlikely Adam would have mistaken another woman for his own mother, Hannah suggested he might have seen her in London before she was killed, but that didn’t fit with what Adam had told me. Seeing how upset she was, I didn’t press her to explain why Adam had lied to me about his mother, but it was clear that he had.
