33 It was growing dark by the time we arrived at the address I had copied from the stinking envelope. From the opposite side of the street I examined our destination, an elegant detached house in a pleasant suburb, where the properties had small, neat front gardens, and the pavement was interrupted at intervals by established trees. As I was studying the house, the curtains at an upstairs window were drawn.
