CHAPTER 11Those few minutes in the light had ruined my night-vision. All I could see in the dark were blurs and bobbing lanterns and torches, all of which seemed to be making noise of some kind. So I almost fell over Edith, still standing in the middle of the yard, gazing about her with bafflement. No one had told her what to do. “Where is he?” I demanded, peering at her, willing the darkness to dissolve around her face at least. “Who?” she asked stupidly. “Hereward, of course!” “Now why...?” “Oh God, you’re utterly useless! Why does he waste his time on you?” I almost flung her away from me. Scouring the darkness, I realized the blurs were forming into men, with swords and axes and spears.
