The grey city was quiet.
Sari found him at the edge of the city, where the buildings stopped and the pavement gave way to a wall. Low and wide, made of grey stone.
He was sitting on it, his back to her.
She walked toward him.
He turned before she reached him.
“Sit with me,” he said.
She climbed onto the wall beside him.
The fog stretched out in front of them.
“Where does it go?” she asked.
“I don't know. I've never tried to find out.”
“Why not?”
“Because I'm afraid that if I leave the city, I won't find my way back.”
“Back to here?”
“Back to you.”
She looked at him. His face was clearer tonight. She could see the line of his nose, the shape of his mouth.
“You always come back,” she said.
“Do I?”
“You're here now.”
He turned to look at her.
