The grey city was waiting. Adrian stood at the center of the empty street, the buildings rising around him. The sky was pale, almost blue, and the fog had pulled back so far he could see the horizon. She appeared at the edge of the street, walking toward him. Her shape was clearer than ever. When she stopped, she was close enough to touch. “I saw your eyes last night,” she said. “And I saw yours.” “Not clearly.” “No. But I saw them.” She stepped closer. The light behind her was dimmer than before. He could see her now. Not clearly—not the way he would see someone in daylight. But enough. The curve of her cheek, the soft line of her jaw, the way her lips parted slightly. Her eyes were brown. Dark brown. He raised his hand. She didn't move away. His fingers touched her cheek.
