Ch27: The Dark Fog

742 Words
The grey city was different tonight. Sari felt it as soon as she arrived—a heaviness in the air, a thickness that hadn't been there before. The buildings still rose around her, sharp and cold, but the light had changed. Dimmer. Flatter. As if something was blocking the sourceless glow. He was there. Standing in the middle of the street, his hands in his pockets, his head tilted in that familiar way. She walked toward him. "I think something's wrong," she said. "I know." He was looking past her, at the sky behind her shoulder. She turned to follow his gaze. The horizon was dark. Not night-dark—night in the grey city was pale, almost white, a strange twilight that never fully faded. This was different. This was thick and black and moving, rolling toward them like smoke from a distant fire. "What is that?" she asked. "I don't know." The darkness spread. It swallowed buildings as it advanced—first the distant ones, then the closer ones, their shapes dissolving into the black. She stepped back. Her shoulder brushed his arm. "We should go," she said. "Where?" She didn't have an answer. The darkness kept coming. It moved faster now, no longer rolling but rushing, a wave of black that ate everything it touched. The grey pavement disappeared beneath it. The pale sky vanished above it. She couldn't move. Her feet were frozen to the ground, rooted by a fear she didn't understand. The darkness was close now—close enough to touch, close enough to feel. "Don't move," he said. His voice was sharp, urgent, nothing like the soft tone he usually used. She tried to turn toward him. She couldn't see him anymore. The darkness had swallowed everything except the small circle of grey at her feet. "Adrian?" No answer. "Adrian!" The darkness reached her. It wasn't cold. It wasn't hot. It was nothing—just absence, just the end of everything she could see and feel and know. She opened her mouth to scream. The dream broke. --- Sari woke gasping. The room was dark. The fan spun. The rain had stopped, and the frogs had fallen silent. Her heart was pounding so hard she could feel it in her throat. Her hands were shaking. Her nightdress was damp with sweat. She pressed her palm against her chest and forced herself to breathe. *One. Two. Three.* The darkness was gone. The grey city was gone. She was in her room, in her bed, in her life. *Four. Five. Six.* She reached for the lamp and turned it on. The light was harsh and yellow, nothing like the pale glow of the dream. But it was real. It was here. She picked up her notebook. *Tonight: black fog. It came from the horizon and swallowed everything. I couldn't move. He told me not to move. Then he disappeared.* *I called his name. I don't know if he heard me.* She set down the pen and pulled her knees up to her chest. The dream had never been like this before. Always calm. Always still. Always grey but never dark. *What changed?* She didn't know. But she knew, with a certainty that sat heavy in her chest, that something was wrong. Not just in the dream. In the world. She closed her eyes and tried to remember the feeling of the darkness—not the fear, but the texture of it. The way it had moved. The way it had eaten the light. *Like smoke*, she thought. *Like the smoke from Mbah Ratu's fires.* Her eyes opened. The smoke. Every night, the cult held rituals that sent black smoke billowing into the sky. She could see it from her window—thick, dark smoke rising above the treetops. *What if the smoke isn't just smoke?* She didn't believe in magic. She didn't believe in omens. But she believed in her dreams now—believed that the grey city was real, believed that he was real, believed that the darkness that had swallowed them meant something. She lay back down and stared at the ceiling. The fan spun. The frogs began to call again, one by one, until the night was loud with their song. She didn't sleep again that night. But she watched the smoke rise from Mbah Ratu's fires, black against the grey sky, and she wondered how long it would be before the darkness came back.
