September 1943 September 1943“Run!” Ruth hissed into Greta’s ear. Now, it must be now. The guards were distracted by a commotion on the other side of the camp. Greta grabbed three-year-old Ezra, hoisting him onto her hip, darting to the fence. Two inmates had already cut through the wire, using the chaos as cover. It was only a matter of time before the hole was discovered and their chance for freedom would be gone. Without even a hasty glance over her shoulder, Greta made it to the triple fence. She took a deep breath. Now, she must go now. She helped Ezra thread through the opening and then followed behind, sliding along their bellies.
