The time had come for Greta to say goodbye to her parents before she and Liesel took on another adventure. A chance encounter with an old acquaintance of Liesel’s helped Greta secure a job for which she would be perfect — reuniting families who had been separated during the war. The position was in the city of Nuremberg in the state of Bavaria. She could hardly wait to share her wonderful news with her parents.
She returned to Katja’s apartment and knocked on the door. The evening before, she had agreed to visit, but arrived a bit earlier than expected. When no one answered, she tried to open the door.
