Sprinting my way trying to get out of the forest, relying on my senses, I Jump up to the trees, the branches serving as my path. Isis silently flew beside me trying to follow my pace. I finally got a whiff of an old road that made me grin. Changing my direction, I can finally sense the road as its scent gets stronger.
“There’s the road.”
Isis, who notified me with a grin plastered on her face, immediately jumped to the tallest tree to take a shortcut. Luckily, I landed on the back of a passing truck. I quickly hid, when I made a loud thud. I can hear the passengers in the back asking the odd noise. I sighed in relief when they quickly dismissed it.
‘That was close’ I was able to escape those shadow hunters by masking my appearance, fighting them head-on will result in me getting captured again. I need to slowly recover my power before the red solar eclipse. The only advantage of being trapped in that prison for 20 years was the information I got from their upcoming plan.
Their plan is to wait for the successor to be awakened, the day when the moon blocks the sun. It may be just a normal eclipse for some but for a sorcerer, the eclipse is one of the most important days to anticipate, the day when the moon blocks the sun a powerful red light will surround the world, not only it is ethereal but it’s also a powerful magical phenomenon that can awaken a sorcerer who is destined to carry the title of the Great sorcerer.
When I first started my lessons, I learned that it will be impossible for a successor to be awakened without any guidance. But this is a different case since Isis transfers all of her power to this child, there will be a possibility for him to easily meet the requirements to be the Great Sorcerer; the only thing missing is his awakening. Now that I think of it, how come Isis is In Front of me when she died transferring all of her power to her successor. I looked up to Isis but I saw her staring aggressively at me. I jumped due to my horror, placing my hand on my chest.
“Sweet God, Isis! Don’t scare me like that”
I muttered under my breathe. She broke out in a fit of laughter holding her stomach as she cackled like a wild hyena, I just rolled my eyes feeling done. After regaining herself. I finally asked her.
“How come you’re still here?”
Confused by my choice of words, she tilts her head, wanting me to give her a specific question.
“I mean, if you’re not living then that means you’re a ghost?”
making sure to express my bewilderment. I can tell that she doesn’t have any physical body since I can clearly see her physical form being transparent.
“Of course not,”
She scoffed, denying my assumption. “The fact that I can appear before you, is because of the fraction of my magic power in you that was triggered.”
I sat there confused with her explanation, ‘how come that it only works now?’ for 20 years trapped in that prison, tortured and almost losing my insanity, she didn’t even appear before me as she did now.
“But why now?”
I unconsciously raised my voice as I was trying to look for her answer. I felt myself boil in anger. Both of my eyebrows crunch, my forehead creases in the process.
“Maybe because the immense feeling that you felt when finally escaping the prison was the thing that triggered me, who knows?”
A half-assed answer for a serious question, and that’s when I snapped. I called her name furiously that caused her to flinch. I was about to say those words; how can you be so carefree? I long for you for 20 years and this is how you answered, I needed my guardian when I was in a hopeless situation. But before I could say anything, she cut me off.
“Damian, I, too, don't know. I don’t pretend to know the cruel things that you faced; I know you needed me at your lowest but we don’t control fate like we wanted to.”
She warned me with the same stern face, she used to scold me when I was young. I lowered my head feeling guilty. Snapping at her won’t change the past, Isis is also helpless just like me. I should’ve been content that she even appeared before me.
“But I do know that I don’t have the power to maintain this appearance.”
I glanced at her, eyes wide open, my eyebrows drew together. “Eventually, I’ll disappear like a bubble.” Staring at her hands, she smiled but her eyes contained sadness.
“So, instead of moping and getting angry at me, why don’t you just enjoy this moment while it lasts?”
I sighed in defeat and nodded. Apologizing because of my behavior, I sat there finally feeling the wind that hit my face, appreciating every moment with her by my side. Our trip didn’t take too long when we finally saw the sign saying WELCOME TO HELIO CITY. Isis, notify me that we were on the right track. I took a long robe in the truck that was laying down untouched and we quickly left the truck. I put on my robe to hide my appearance.
It would be too hard if humans ever saw me. Isis leading the way, I tried following her while avoiding bumping into people. I watched Isis as she walked confidently on the unfamiliar roads of the city.
“How come you know where to go in this place? I know that this place was the closest to the big mansion but didn’t we have any rules to not visit human places without any reason?”
I asked, following her. I take a glimpse at the human population. It was amusing how they need so many humongous buildings, and how they walk as if someone was chasing them.
“I used to visit my son in this city, and just as I hope for, they didn’t leave.”
I forgot that Isis was already old enough to have a son, I was just fooled by her youthful appearance.
“Wait. I’m assuming that we're heading to him?”
she nods, giving me a smug look. I slowly followed behind her, still confused, ‘so her son is now 20 years old then that means...’ I stopped realizing that Isis’s offspring is her successor. No wonder Isis was so excited.
“My son is not my successor.”
Isis, who got a hint of what I was thinking, opposed.
“The last time I saw my son he was already having his firstborn..”
My mouth hangs open as I can’t believe the words that she uttered. Trying to understand what she meant I stared at her in disbelief. So that means, Isis is already old enough to be a grandma, I was just fooled by her youthful appearance all along. This is insane.
“The one we'll be visiting is my Grandson. The one I chose to be my successor.”
I pursued my lip as I heard the word successor. Continuing on our way to the said house, Isis began to explain to me how he got a son without telling our former comrades, including me.
She stated that before she was awakened as the great sorceress she fell in love with a human. She doesn’t have any trouble admitting her feelings for the said lad in that time since there are no rules that sorcerers are forbidden to fall in love with a human.
Their love blooms that resulted in her getting pregnant but even before the child was born the man met a tragic accident that caused him to lose his life, due to the shock, Isis bear his baby premature and has a lack of magical energy but because they are sorcerers who can heal anyone, the baby grew healthy, unfortunately, he doesn’t inherit his mother sorceress blood, since they decided to get rid of it before it can harm her offspring, the only one who knows that she gave birth were the elders and her mother.
After she gave birth, the red moon appears that officially gave her the title of the great sorceress. Making enemies along the way, Isis gave his son to her mother, Achlys Dewin, hiding him in the human population, which Isis planned to deem successful. She visited him every year of his birthday until his son became a grown man and finally found the woman she wanted to spend around ‘til his last life.
Isis was greatly overjoyed to see his son grow up and even meet his grandson, the last time she visited is the day when all of it fall, she didn’t want to have any regrets so she decided to tell him everything about the truth of his mother but before she can confront him, he met his grandson. Isis, who was overwhelmed and crying while carrying the baby, the couple decided to let her name their son in which Isis accepted, and then the rest is history.
“The only thing I regret is that I didn’t even get to hear my own son calling me mother”
Even though she’s smiling I can sense the sadness on her face. Realizing the words, she said, Isis was never given a chance to be a mother to her own child because of her duties. The path to becoming great is a path to becoming solitude. She stopped Infront of me which I followed. I looked up at what she was staring at and I finally noticed where we were.
“We’ve arrived,” she muttered, I stared at her and then at the house.
“I named him Larcade,”
Confused by what she said, I waited for her to continue, “Larcade which evokes righteousness, I named him to the very first word I thought, Larcade Dewin.”
She smiled proudly, maybe also recalling the first and last time she saw her grandson.
‘That’s a beautiful name.’ I wanted to praise her for choosing such a wonderful name, but I paused when I saw her slowly disappearing before me. My instincts wanted me to grab her but she raised her palm indicating me to stop.
“I finally get to meet my grandson, Damian, don’t worry. The short amount of time that we spend is enough for me, you wouldn’t know how I feel when I get to see your face,” I stand there doing without doing anything just like she wants me to.
“Goodbye for now”
She finally left without leaving a trace, however, instead of feeling sad, I was feeling a great sense of pleasure. Instead of feeling that her goodbye was a way of parting, I felt that she will still appear before me again, not now but soon.
Finally, knowing the descendants' house, I tried to hide and guard it, for the time being, planning to wait for a good time. I guard there until the moon rises. Making sure that no one was around, I went out of my hiding spot, standing at their front lawn.
I tried to sense the descendant’s presence but to no avail, his powers were so completely sealed that even a demon like me can’t even sense it. Suddenly a man from the house next door went outside and approached. I tried to hide my appearance. I quickly dismissed him, but humans always have this tendency to be stubborn. To my annoyance, I tried to scare him by acting to punch him but to my surprise he successfully blocked it.
“So, you’re doing this the hard way, huh?”
He said with a smug look and that’s when I snapped, I tried punching him again on his left face but the bastard was able to dodge it. Surprising me with a kick I went flying but luckily, I was able to land on my feet.
But the force of his kick was odd. Usually, if a normal human kicked me in any part of my body, there wouldn’t be any bruises nor would it feel painful. Since I was born to be a demon with unnatural powers. However, this guy was able to hurt me. I dashed at him, increasing my speed. I grinned in satisfaction underneath my robe when it landed and made a bruise on his cheek. Before I can celebrate, he counterattacks my punch by hitting my face that results in a cut in my lips. I wiped the blood.
“What am I doing fighting with a mere human?”
I mutter under my breath. Deciding that this was enough, I ran away to a nearby park and hid in the woods. Finding a good tree to rest, I sat down there healing my bruises, while doing so I stared at the night sky. The big full moon greeted my existence. I recalled the fight I had a while ago. Realizing that the guy I met was the first-ever human who successfully hurt and left a bruise in my body.
