Jessie's eyes scanned the letter, her heart sinking with each word. She felt like she'd been punched in the gut. Summer was gone, and the thought of living without her best friend was unbearable. "If you're seeing this now, it means I'm gone for good," Jessie read aloud, her voice trembling. "I promise I'll come find you when I'm ready... Promise to keep this a secret." Jessie's tears flowed freely as she folded the letter and tucked it into her pocket. She had to see Summer, to talk her out of leaving. Jessie sprinted out the door, racing toward the McDave's house. She burst through the front door, out of breath. "Summer! Summer, where are you?" she called out, but there was only silence. The McDave's family stirred, groggy from sleep. "What's going on?" Mr. McDave growled, annoyed. "Where's Summer?" Jessie demanded. Mrs. McDave sat up, rubbing her eyes. "She's...she's not here. I think she might have gone out." Jessie's eyes widened as she searched the house, but Summer was nowhere to be found. She spotted the empty space where Summer's suitcase used to be. The McDave's family slowly realized Summer was gone, and their expressions transformed from annoyance to panic. "That ungrateful girl," Mrs. McDave muttered. "Who's going to do all the chores now?" Mr. McDave's face turned red with rage. "And what about the $50,000? That money was for Amy's future, not for Summer to run off with!" Amy's eyes welled up with tears, but not for Summer's departure. "Mom, Dad, what about me? Who's going to take care of me now?" The family's true nature was laid bare, and Jessie felt a chill run down her spine. She knew she had to keep Summer's secret safe. As Jessie turned to leave, she caught a glimpse of something on the floor – a torn piece of paper with a few scribbled words: "Meet me at the old oak tree at midnight. Come alone." Jessie's heart skipped a beat. Was this Summer's plan all along? And who was she meeting? The mystery deepened, leaving Jessie with more questions than answers. She knew one thing – she'd keep Summer's secret, no matter what. At midnight Jessie's mind reeled as she walked away from the McDave's house. She felt a mix of emotions: sadness, anger, and worry. She knew Summer had been unhappy, but she had no idea she'd leave so abruptly. As she approached the old oak tree, Jessie's heart pounded in her chest. Who was Summer meeting? And why? The tree loomed before her, its branches creaking in the wind. Jessie saw a figure in the shadows – a figure she didn't recognize. "Who are you?" Jessie demanded, her voice firm. The figure stepped forward, revealing a woman with piercing green eyes. "I'm someone who knows Summer's true identity," she said, her voice low. Jessie's eyes widened. "What do you mean?" The woman handed Jessie a folder filled with documents and photographs. "Summer's parents aren't who she thinks they are. They're not even her biological parents." Jessie's mind spun as she flipped through the papers. She saw birth certificates, adoption papers, and newspaper clippings. "Who are you?" Jessie asked again, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm someone who can help Summer uncover the truth about her past," the woman replied. "And I need your help to find her." Jessie's eyes locked onto the woman's. "I'll do whatever it takes to help Summer." The woman smiled, a hint of determination in her eyes. "Good. We have a long journey ahead of us." Together, they set out to uncover the secrets surrounding Summer's identity. Jessie's adventure had just begun, and she was ready to face whatever lay ahead. As they walked, the woman revealed more about Summer's past. "Summer's biological parents were involved in a high-profile scandal. They were forced to give her up for adoption to protect their reputation." Jessie's eyes widened. "That's why Summer's parents kept it a secret." The woman nodded. "Yes. But there's more. Summer's biological parents might still be alive, and they might be looking for her." Jessie's heart skipped a beat. What would Summer say when she found out the truth about her past? And would she be ready to face the consequences? The journey ahead would be filled with twists and turns, but Jessie was determined to help Summer uncover the truth about her identity. Jessie stood outside the mysterious woman's office, her mind reeling with questions. The woman's words echoed in her mind: "Summer's gone to college, but she's not safe. There are people who want to hurt her." The woman handed Jessie a folder with Summer's college information. "Be careful, Jessie. You're getting close to the truth." Jessie took a deep breath and left the office, determination fueling her steps. She packed her bags, said goodbye to her family, and boarded a bus to the city where Summer's college was located. As the countryside gave way to urban sprawl, Jessie's excitement grew. She was finally taking action to help her friend. But a nagging sense of unease lingered. What would she find in the city? Would Summer be okay? The bus ride was long, but Jessie hardly noticed. She was lost in thought, replaying her conversation with the mysterious woman. Who was she, really? And what did she know about Summer's situation? When the bus finally pulled into the city station, Jessie grabbed her bags and stepped out into the bustling streets. She hailed a taxi and gave the driver the address of Summer's college. The city was overwhelming, but Jessie was focused. She would find Summer and help her friend, no matter what it took. As the taxi drove through the city streets, Jessie felt a sense of trepidation. She was in unfamiliar territory, and the city seemed to stretch on forever.
