CHAPTER FOUR The doorbell rang again as Carly dashed downstairs. When she opened the door, it took her a moment to recognize the visitor. It was a face she hadn’t seen for many years—although she had once known it well. “Hi, Mark,” she said. “Hi, Carly.” His face was fuller now. There were darker circles beneath his eyes, and more furrows in his brow. And he was wearing glasses. Even so, Mark Lawson still had the same earnest good looks that he’d had a decade ago. “How did you know I was here?” Carly asked. “Hey, this is Currie, Illinois.” Carly chuckled a little. She’d almost forgotten how fast word traveled here. Doubtless Mom had mentioned her arrival to a student or fellow teacher, or Dad had said something to his dental assistant or his receptionist or one of his patients, and
