Chapter Two

1199 Words
“Easy Alexa, you’re distracting your sister” Mrs. Cruz called out to the wailing Alexa who sat alone in the backseat of the car as Brenda sped across the street, heading downtown towards the hospital with her hand firmly gripping the steering of her latest model black SUV she got as her birthday gift from dad earlier this year with Mrs. Cruz buckled up beside her looking back and frowning at her cry baby sister behind. Brenda would have laughed at the mini drama ongoing in her car but she was tensed up, the stranger that called earlier informed her that her parents were involved in a serious car accident so nothing at the moment was funny, not even her sister’s wide opened mouth nor her over dramatic not so cute crying image on display in her driver’s rear view mirror and the not so thrilled Mrs. Cruz sending glares in Alexa’s direction occasionally. She took her eyes off the mirror and focused her gaze on the road, silently praying and hoping that her parents were alright. In no time they arrived at the hospital and Brenda drove in and parked the car in the first empty slot she came across. Alexa jumped out of the vehicle even before Brenda was able to bring the car to a complete halt which resulted in a loud gasp from Mrs. Cruz who hurried out after her but she had already dashed across the parking lot and was heading into the main building like an escaped lunatic. Brenda rolled her eyes at her sister's behavior and shut down the engine before she alighted from the car. She locked up the car and rushed in after her over reacting sister and the wide eyed Mrs. Cruz and approached them both already in a conversation with someone who seemed to be a doctor in his neatly pressed, bright white lab coat that carried the name Trevor written in bold italic green letters. He looked confused as he tried to make out what the both of them were saying as they were both catching their breaths and trying to form sentences while panting and his expression became horrified as Alexa stretched forth her hand and gripped his faultless lab coat trying to balance herself in her slightly bent position while trying to calm her fast uneven breathing from running all the way up the stairs. Poor Trevor “Hello Trevor” Brenda greeted from behind them in a very formal tone with her eyes fixed on his name tag. “I am Brenda Montez, daughter of Mr. Xavier and Mrs. Rosa Montez, this is Mrs. Cruz, and this is my little sister Alexa” Brenda introduced them alll properly, wearing a plastic smile and taking his extended hand in a brief handshake before reaching for her sister’s fist in an attempt to loosen her grip on the young man’s lab coat. “Miss Montez, I'm glad you've finally arrived, come this way, we have been expecting you” Trevor stated motioning towards a door that stood on the left hand side of the hospital’s hallway while eyeing Alexa’s tiny fist. “Your aunt can come along with you too” Trevor added now shifting his gaze to Mrs. Cruz “I’m not really their au…………” Mrs. Cruz tried to chip in “Hey! What about me? Why didn’t you invite me in?” Alexa inquired with raised eyebrows cutting her off, now finally releasing his lab coat. “Kids are not allowed in there” Trevor replied dryly his eyes glaring at the now squeezed spot on his lab coat she just let out of her grip and his face held a grudgy scowl after his failed attempt to straighten out his lab coat with his palm. “I am NINETEEN!!” Alexa bit back a little bit too louder than necessary which drew the attention of everyone who was present within the vicinity. Brenda gave an apologetic smile to everyone she managed to have eye contact with while Mrs. Cruz practically pulled Alexa aside and hid her behind her away from the glares the people that looked in their direction. “I’m sorry about her behavior, but I can't go anywhere without her, she's my little sister like I said earlier, so she’s definitely coming with me” Brenda clearly stated spreading out her right arm to Alexa who rushed over and fit herself into her sister’s side hug before she flashed the frowning Trevor a triumphant smirk which pissed him off even more. And with that she headed towards the door swaying her thick honey blonde curls and taking proud steps while Trevor grumbled and followed behind her. “What’s with them?” Mrs. Cruz asked Brenda who just shrugged in response as they both followed behind Alexa and Trevor. Alexa flung the door open the very moment she approached it and immediately froze on the spot. Color drained from her eyes as she watched a nurse dressed in a green and yellow flowered scrub drape a white cloth over her Father’s head beside an already covered body she couldn’t but help conclude was her mother….. She felt her whole world come crashing down as she dropped down hard on her knees and felt the painful surge of waterworks roll down her cheeks uncontrollably, the others appeared behind her, and the trio all wore the same horrified expression as they looked into the widely opened door. Brenda lost it immediately and dashed into the room with Mrs. Cruz running after her which drew the attention of the staffs who hurried over to meet them. Brenda dashed past them and unveiled the corpse and was greeted by her Parents blood stained lifeless bodies. The doctor and his crew all expressed their condolences before leaving the ward. Brenda felt a sting in her eyes as hot tears immediately began to flow the moment she knelt beside them both. Alexa remained rooted in her spot as the image of the nurse draping her father’s head replayed over and over again in her mind with free careless tears flowing down and her sister’s loud cries of sorrow piercing her heart. The remorse filled Trevor knelt close beside Alexa and pulled her in for a tight embrace, she clung unto the all of a sudden nice Trevor who didn’t seem to care so much about his lab coat anymore as he didn’t mind her tears soaking it when she sank her neck in the crook of his neck and he wordlessly and gently tap her back while Brenda clung so dearly to the also sobbing Mrs. Cruz. After what seemed like a very long time, the ward became silent except for the frequent little sobs that escaped Alexa's mouth. Brenda reached out for her little sister and wrapped her in her arms holding her in a tight embrace with her face buried in her hair, she was her only family now, and always had to look after her. This was indeed a nightmare, the kind you hope is all but a dream but unfortunately for the Montez sisters, it was a reality, it was their reality..
