What just happened?

Lin’s POV The heavy silence of the royal chambers was a physical, suffocating force. It pressed down on the room, thick with the scent of s*x, ozone, and the crushing weight of an Alpha King’s absolute authority. Standing in the doorway, the three men looked as though they had walked straight into a death trap. My brothers. I hadn’t seen them in weeks, but I’d recognize them anywhere. Brad, the oldest, stood in front, his dark eyes nearly bulging from their sockets. Behind him, Sydney had gone pale, while the youngest, Noah, looked like he was about to faint. They had come expecting to find a defenseless, wolfless sibling being ruined by a feral beast. Instead, they found the legendary King, fully returned, claiming his fated mate. "What did you come for?" Moses's voice cracked through the room like a whip, low and final. He didn't raise it. He didn't have to. Brad, Sydney, and Noah flinched as one, their ears flattening. The pressure in the air turned heavy as lead, forcing their knees to buckle slightly. "Well?" Moses rumbled again, tightening his arm around my waist, anchoring me to him as if I were a piece of land he had conquered. "You barged into my chambers, into my mate's claiming, and now you have nothing to say?" Noah swallowed hard, staring at me—at my flushed face, my tangled hair, and the dark, raw mark starting to form at the base of my throat. Something in his face crumpled. He took a shaky, terrified step backward. "Lin?" he whispered, his voice barely audible. The sound of my name on his lips made my heart squeeze, but Brad grabbed his arm so tightly Noah winced. "We need to go," Brad breathed, his eyes darting to the molten gold terrifying gaze of the King beside me. "Now." Without another word, they turned and fled. All three of them, tails tucked, bolted back down the hallway, their heavy footsteps fading into the dark. My brothers—the ones who had watched in silence as our father traded me away like worthless property—had abandoned me again. I should have felt relieved. Instead, I felt sick. "Those idiots..." Ricardo’s furious growl cut through the silence. He did not run. He stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his eyes locked on his father with a hatred so old it looked inherited. "This is my house. She's not yours! She's a debt. Mine." "Careful," Moses said softly. The softness was somehow more frightening than a roar. "That's the second time you've called my mate a debt in front of me, Ricardo. There won't be a third." "She belongs to me!" Ricardo shouted, completely unraveling. "I bought her!" The room seemed to freeze. A dangerous, icy silence settled over the chamber. Moses’s eyes turned colder than winter, his grip on my waist tightening for a fraction of a second. "You what?" I didn't wait to hear the rest. The word bought twisted in my stomach, turning my newfound wolf power into a spike of pure adrenaline. I scrambled backward, slipping out from under Moses’s arm, and snatched the heavy velvet duvet off the bed. Wrapping it tightly around myself like a makeshift gown, I bolted past them before either Alpha could stop me. I didn't get far. As I rounded the corner into the eastern corridor, a hand clamped brutally around my wrist. I was spun around, my back hitting the cold stone wall. It was Ricardo. He had followed me, his face twisted in a desperate, ugly sneer. "You think because my father touched you, you’re free?" he hissed, leaning in so close I could smell the stale sweat on his skin. "A mate bond doesn't erase a debt, Lin. He's a madman. He’s going to tear you apart, and when he’s done, you’ll remember whose arms you belong in. I own you." A sudden, white-hot spark of rage flared in the base of my spine. My inner wolf snarled, and without thinking, I bared my teeth. The raw, heavy aura of a high-ranking wolf rolled off me in a sudden wave. Ricardo froze, his eyes widening in sheer shock. The grip on my wrist loosened. I wrenched my arm free, shoving him back with a strength that cracked against his chest, and ran. I reached my old, cramped maid's room, threw myself inside, and slammed the heavy oak door. I threw the iron deadbolt into place just as Ricardo's fist rattled the wood. "Lin! Lin, open this door!" I slid down the back of the door, letting the velvet duvet pool around me on the dusty floorboards. I covered my ears, breathing hard, waiting for my heart to stop its frantic hammering. What had just happened to me? An hour ago, I was a wolfless freak chained to a chair, praying for death. Now, I had a wolf. A pure white wolf. And a fated mate who happened to be the King. I touched my collarbone, tracing the tender, burning spot where Moses’s teeth had almost claimed me. How had I allowed a complete stranger to touch me like that? To almost mark me? I didn't know anything about him. Yet, my wolf had bowed to him instantly. And as the memory of his heavy, crushing weight washed over me—the desperate hunger in his touch, the way he looked at me like I was something precious to be worshipped rather than an object to be spent—a soft, breathless smile tugged at the corners of my lips. I buried my burning face in my knees, a quiet laugh escaping me. It had been, without question, the best I'd ever felt in my life. Outside, Ricardo's frantic knocking abruptly stopped. For a single breath, the corridor went dead silent. Then, a different voice came through the thick wood. Deeper. Rougher. A low, patient rumble that vibrated straight through the floorboards and directly into my core. "Lin," Moses said. "Open the door." I pressed a hand over my racing heart. Ricardo was gone, dismissed by a silent, terrifying shadow. Only the King remained. For the first time in my hundred days of captivity, I wasn't being dragged, chained, or forced. I stared at the wood separating us, realizing the truth of my new life. I had a wolf. I had a mate. And I finally had a choice.
