Chapter 6: Breaking Point

742 Words
Jazmine had enough. The past week had been unbearable—Devon distant, his vague excuses, the faint smell of perfume clinging to him no matter how close she got. Hercules sat in her lap, sensing her growing agitation, but even his little paw couldn’t calm the storm inside her. When Devon walked through the door that night, casual as ever, her patience snapped. “Devon! What the hell is going on with you?!” she shouted, her voice cracking with anger. Hercules yipped and tried to squirm into her arms for comfort. Devon froze, glancing at her with a mix of surprise and irritation. “What are you talking about?” he asked, trying to sound casual. “This! You!” she yelled, gesturing wildly. “The way you’ve been acting—ignoring me, disappearing for hours, leaving me here like I’m nothing, coming home smelling like someone else! Do you have any idea how it feels?!” Devon’s jaw tightened. “Oh, here we go again. You’re blowing this out of proportion!” “Blowing it out of proportion?!” Jazmine shouted, her voice rising. “Do you know what it’s like to feel like your boyfriend doesn’t even want you anymore? Do you?!” “Stop yelling at me, Jazmine!” Devon snapped, moving toward her with a hand raised—but instead of trying to calm her, he shoved her back slightly with the side of his arm. “Get out of my face!” Jazmine stumbled backward, clutching Hercules to her chest. “Are you serious right now?!” she shouted, her voice cracking. “You think you can just push me away and everything’s fine?!” Devon’s face darkened. “You’re insane! I can’t even deal with you right now!” “You’re insane!” Jazmine shot back, tears welling up, anger boiling over. “I’ve been trying to be patient, trying to trust you, and you’ve been lying to me this whole damn time!” “Lying to you?!” Devon barked, his own voice rising, echoing off the apartment walls. “I’m not the one acting crazy!” “You’ve been ignoring me! You’ve been cheating on me! You’ve been treating me like s**t for weeks!” she screamed, voice raw, echoing with the panic and frustration she had held inside for days. Hercules yipped loudly, tiny paws pawing at her chest. Devon’s face twisted in anger, and he reached out to push her again. “Get out of my way!” “I’m not moving!” Jazmine yelled, nearly lunging toward him. “You think you can just walk all over me and I’ll stay quiet?! Not anymore!” The shouting was deafening. Every insult, every accusation, every curse spilled into the apartment. F-bombs and slurs flew freely as the fight escalated, voices so loud and angry that they carried through the thin walls to the neighbors. “Shut the hell up, Devon!” she screamed. “You’ve been treating me like garbage!” “You’re such a drama queen!” he roared back, red-faced. “You’re impossible!” The yelling continued, growing more chaotic, more uncontrolled, until a sharp knock at the door broke through the noise. Jazmine froze, Hercules pressing his tiny body against her chest. Another knock followed, louder this time. “Police! We’ve had reports of a domestic disturbance! Open up!” Jazmine’s heart plummeted. Her chest heaved, tears streaming freely now. Hercules whimpered, sensing her panic, pawing at her hand. Devon glared at her, breathing heavily, his face twisted with anger and guilt. The reality hit her like a punch to the gut: their fight had escalated so badly that the neighbors thought they were in danger. And maybe… maybe she was. Jazmine took a deep, shaky breath, clutching Hercules tighter. “I… I need space,” she said, voice barely audible over the sound of sirens starting to wail in the distance. She backed away toward the bedroom, letting the little dog press against her for comfort. Devon didn’t follow. He stayed on the couch, chest heaving, hands trembling slightly, staring after her. The apartment was filled with tension, the remnants of their explosive argument lingering like smoke. Hercules licked her cheek as if to say, I’m here. We’ll get through this. Jazmine buried her face in his fur, letting the warmth of her tiny dog be the only comfort she had at that moment of complete chaos.
