Chapter 15: The Truth Revealed

688 Words
Jazmine’s chest tightened with every step as she walked down the quiet, dimly lit streets with Hercules trotting beside her. The night air was cool, tinged with the smell of wet asphalt from a recent drizzle, but it did little to calm the storm raging inside her. Every breath felt shallow, every heartbeat a frantic drum, echoing in her ears. I’m overreacting, she told herself for the hundredth time. I’m imagining it. He wouldn’t… he wouldn’t cheat on me. Yet the doubts clawed at her relentlessly. The note on the counter. The faint trace of perfume lingering on his jacket. The flowers that had appeared without explanation. The laughter she had overheard at the bar. Each small detail that she had tried to dismiss now stacked together, forming a chilling pattern she could no longer ignore. Hercules nudged her hand, his warm, wet nose grounding her for a brief moment, but the worry and anxiety returned instantly. She could feel the knot in her stomach tightening as she approached Devon’s house, the streetlamp casting long shadows across the pavement. Her hand hesitated on the doorknob. She swallowed, trying to steady her trembling fingers. It’s probably nothing, she whispered again. But her heart didn’t believe her. The faint sound of laughter froze her in place. Her chest clenched. That laugh—light, intimate, familiar—made her stomach twist violently. She slowly pushed the door open, peering into the dim hallway. The living room was illuminated by the soft glow of a single lamp, and there they were—Devon and Liz—too close, too intimate, wrapped up in each other in a way that no “friendship” ever should be. Jazmine’s stomach lurched. Her hands tightened around Hercules’ leash, knuckles white. Her legs trembled, threatening to give out beneath her. A scream clawed its way up her throat but caught halfway, strangled by shock. Her vision blurred with tears. Devon’s head snapped toward the sound of the door, eyes wide with panic. Liz froze as well, guilt immediately etched across her face. But it was too late—the image was burned into Jazmine’s mind. She stumbled backward, heart hammering, her chest constricting painfully. “No… no… it can’t be…” Her voice was a whisper, barely audible, trembling with disbelief and hurt. Devon’s mouth opened, closed, opened again—nothing came out that could undo the devastation. “You…” Jazmine’s voice cracked as she took a shuddering step forward. “How… how could you do this… with her?” Devon tried to speak, but the words faltered. “I… Jaz—” “I trusted you!” she yelled, tears streaming down her face. “I gave you everything! I… I loved you! And you… you…” Her words trailed off as she sank to the floor, clutching Hercules close, the little dog whining softly at her side, sensing her despair. The warmth of his fur was the only comfort she could cling to as the reality of betrayal hit her like a punch to the chest. Devon and Liz exchanged glances, the silence between them heavy, uncomfortable. Every heartbeat felt like a drum of doom in Jazmine’s ears. “I… I…” Devon finally stammered, his voice barely audible, as though the words had lost all power against the damage they’d caused. Jazmine’s hands shook violently. She pressed her face into Hercules’ soft fur, letting herself cry, letting herself feel the pain she had fought to deny for so long. She could hear Devon’s footsteps retreating, Liz’s sigh of frustration and guilt, but everything was muffled, as if she were underwater. And then… a soft click. A door somewhere in the house—not the front door, not the one she’d entered—shut quietly, almost imperceptibly. Jazmine froze, heart hammering. She hadn’t noticed anyone else enter. Her breath caught. Something was moving. Someone was watching her. Or waiting. And in that instant, with tears streaming down her face, Hercules trembling slightly in her lap, Jazmine realized that this night—and this moment—was far from over. Something else was coming…
