Chapter 2

She looked around the beautifully decorated room. Searching for anyone that she recognized but with no such luck. She did however come across, through the crowded room, the most mesmerizing eyes she had ever seen. They almost reminded her of someone. Even from a distance she could see they were a beautiful emerald green. After a few seconds of gazing into those bewitching eyes she was finally able to see the rest of the face. And what she saw had to be a mistake. She now fully remembered those dazzling eyes and she couldn't believe she was seeing that face. A face she had hoped to never see again.       Quickly, she started to make her way out of the room. She didn't want to be in his presence any longer. But before she could reach the double doors that led to her freedom, she felt a  hand grab her arm. And once again she was forced to meet those beautiful eyes.     "Well hello, Angeline!"     Before she could say a word, he sent a shiver down her spine when he whishpered in her ear, "You look beautiful in that dress. I was a little nervous about what size to get you. Hope you will still save me that dance."     She pulled away from him with a horrified look on her face. She stammered to get her question out, "Y-you sent me the invitation and the dress?"     He simply stared at her with a grin on his face. She felt like they stayed in this trance for  far to long before he finally broke the connection when his eyes shifted towards the ground.        He looked back up at her and said, "I didn't think you would come if you knew it came from me." He pulled her away from the doors and continued, "I know we have a messy history, and I was hoping I could make that up to you."     Before she could give him a response everyone was being directed to their assigned tables, and at each table they would find their place card with their name on it. Indicateing where they will be sitting for the evening.     Angeling knew she was at table 14, so she walked past him quickly and made her way to her table. Upon finding her name, she noticed the name of the person that was to be sitting to the left of her.     And at that moment he walked up to her and pulled her chair out, she didn't want everyone to think she was being rude, so she took his offer and sat down. Once she was seated, he took the seat next to her.     He fondled with the card with his name on it. How could such an awful name look so beautiful? She kept staring at it....                         'Alexander C. Adams'     Someone finally broke her focus on the name and the card it was written on. "And how do you two know each other?" ,the woman to Angeline's right had asked her.     Before she could answer, she heard Alex say, "We grew up together." The woman gave a sweet little smile and said, "Well you make a beautiful couple, hope you enjoy the evening. It's sure to be filled with love and magic."     Angeline wanted to explain that they were not a couple, they had never been a couple. That this night was going to be filled with disappointment, all she wanted to do was storm out. But she knew it would be inappropriate to cause such a scene, especially at the Grand Hudson Ball. So she bit her tongue and just smiled politely back at her and said, "Thank you, and you also."                                     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~     The last of the dessert plates were being picked up by the servers. Angeline had never been so uncomfortable in her life. She had been trying to make small talk with those at their table, all while trying to avoid his eyes.     She knows he wants to talk, why else would he go through all of this trouble? Sending her an invitation to the most prestigious event of the town. Gifting her the most amazing dress she had ever seen. He definitely wanted something from her, but she was terrified to find out exactly what that was.     As the tables were being cleared of any remaining dirty dishes, everyone started to make their way to the dance floor. Angeline thought this was her chance, her chance to get out without having to speak to him or even look at him again.     But to her dismay, the lady from their table had her only escape route blocked. The woman, maintaining eye contact with Angeline, would not allow her to leave without seeing the two  of them dance at least once. Angeline could not believe her luck, she was going to have to be face to face with him. And would have to actually communicate with him.     Alex held out his hand and asked Angeline, "Will you dance with me?" She took a deep breath and replied as she took his hand, "One dance and then I'm leaving."        "Fair enough", Alex said with a sigh of relief. He was surprised that she stayed as long as she had. He had expected her to excuse herself at any moment during dinner and instead of going to the ladies room she would make her way to the parking lot. But perhaps she was curious as to why he wanted to see her. She hardly looked in his direction at the table, so he was pretty confident she wasn't staying to be in his presence.     A soothing melody filled the room, and the two of them came together, hand in hand, and slowly started moving to the rhythem of the music.     With her heals on, Alex was only a few inches taller than her. She placed her arms on his broad shoulders and couldn't help but tousle his light brown hair with her fingers. A flood of memories rushed into mind as he wrapped his muscular arms around her slender body.     She didn't want to admit that he looked amazing in his tux. He has always had the perfect frame to pull it off. But the last time she saw him in a tux was the night she could never forget. The night he ruined everything and completely crushed her heart.
